Once the food was served, Elara asked, "Do you have any other conditions?"
Julian just looked at her, silent.
She pulled a document from her briefcase and slid it across the table. "If you don't have any other demands, then sign this."
"I can agree to anything you want. That was my only condition."
Julian's face darkened as he realized what he was looking at. "So your 'forgiveness' comes with the price of signing this?"
"I'm simply taking back my dowry," Elara said evenly. She handed him a pen. "Sign it, and the Sterling family will get their four generations under one roof. Your grandfather is getting on in years, and I don't want him to leave this world with any regrets. It is an innocent life, after all."
"Elara, you never used to be this kind of person."
"It's your first child. Are you really that reluctant to spend a little money? Besides, it's my money to begin with."
"I plan on spending the rest of my life with you. I don't have children either, and there's a good chance I might never be able to. So what are you worried about? Are you afraid I'll funnel the funds back to my family? This was my parents' money in the first place!"
"I will continue to stay married to you, maintain your public image, and help you make a profit. You won't lose out on this deal no matter how you look at it. I'm infinitely more useful to you than that TV host. What does she even bring to the table?"
"This should be a win-win situation. Why are you hesitating?"
"They say money reveals true colors. I'm only giving you this one chance tonight, Julian. If you don't sign, I'll see you in court."
She held the pen out to him.
Julian took it, his brow furrowed deeply. "Are you coming back to the estate with me tonight?"
Elara nodded. "If you need me to, yes."
He gripped the pen but didn't move. Elara asked softly, "Why the hesitation? This is my dowry."
"If you keep disappointing me like this, I might just change my mind."
After a long internal struggle, Julian finally signed his name.
The moment the ink was dry, Elara tucked the document back into her briefcase.
She placed a piece of food on his plate. "Eat up, Mr. Sterling."
"Don't call me that," he muttered.
