The day dragged on, heavy and chaotic.

When Elara finally retreated to a private room to rest, she found... the TV host.

Vanessa Quinn was dressed in mourning clothes. Her 'no-makeup' makeup look was meticulously crafted, complete with faint red eyeshadow under her eyes to create the perfect illusion of someone who had been weeping inconsolably.

She was the absolute picture of fragile sorrow.

Seeing Elara walk in, Vanessa pressed a hand to her lower back and slowly pushed herself up. She thrust her belly forward slightly and murmured, "You're here too, Elara."

Elara stared at her coldly. At this stage of pregnancy, there would be a slight bump, but under the loose mourning robes, it was entirely invisible unless she made a deliberate show of behaving like a heavily pregnant woman.

Clearly, she was doing this purely to provoke her.

Elara walked right up to her and slapped her across the face. Then she backhanded her for good measure.

"Let me remind you exactly why I'm here. Because I am the legal, eldest daughter-in-law of the Sterling family."

Vanessa tried to push back, but Elara snapped, "Don't move! If you lose that baby, you have absolutely nothing left."

Vanessa froze, too terrified to fight back.

But Elara didn't stop. She delivered several more sharp, brutal slaps, the crack of skin on skin ringing sharply in the room.

"I'm giving you a natural red flush so you don't have to waste time painting it on."

Realizing Elara wasn't holding back, panic seized Vanessa. She started begging. "I didn't want to get pregnant! It was Julian—he couldn't control himself..."

"He went so deep every time... that's why I got pregnant!"
