"If you're tired of fighting, that's fine. I'll take over," Zane said, reaching for her hand again. "You can do whatever you want."
"Has anyone ever told you that you're being ridiculous?"
"Yes. You," Zane chuckled. "But I think you're being more ridiculous. You know a capital injection is the best choice."
"Maybe it's just thirty years of useless pride making me refuse a handout," Elara sighed.
"How is it a handout?" Zane smiled. "Marry me, and everything that's mine is yours." He paused, his gaze softening. "And I am yours, too."
"Stop talking nonsense." Elara gently pushed his hand away. "Go take a shower."
It was still early. What did she mean by telling him to shower? Was that why she invited him over? Although his mind drifted in that direction, he knew she had been angry in the lounge the other day. She had only held back her temper because of all the favors he had done for her in the past.
"I really didn't mean it like that," Zane laughed, catching his own thoughts. "Lie back. I'll grab a bowl and help you take off your makeup."
"It's fine, I can do it myself."
"Just lie down. I know you're exhausted."
There was no washbasin in the house, so Zane fetched a stainless steel bowl from the kitchen, then gathered her skincare products from the master bedroom's vanity.
His touch was incredibly light as he carefully massaged the cleanser into her skin in soft circles. Elara found it hard to believe that a man with such strong, commanding hands could be so excruciatingly gentle.
If only a person could remain foolishly devoted forever, seeing it through to the end. But the human heart was the most fickle thing in the world. She couldn't even guarantee her own feelings, so how could she demand such permanence from him?
If the circumstances were different, she truly would have wanted to give it a try. But his love was too heavy, and the price he was willing to pay was too steep. It was a debt she couldn't shoulder and could never repay.
With the lingering presence of Nadia Neville in his life, any fleeting pleasure she took with him would only subject her conscience to brutal lashes. The right person really had to be met at the right time.
Unbidden, two lines of tears slipped down her temples.
Zane's hands stilled. "What's wrong?" he asked softly.
