Despite claiming he was in no rush, the moment he finished making sure Elara was cleaned up, Zane practically scrambled to pick his clothes off the floor.

Watching him, Elara couldn't shake the illusion that he looked exactly like a man who had just finished with an escort and was terrified his wife would catch him.

"Is your wife calling you home? Or are you just terrified she'll notice you're late?"

Zane hitched up his pants. "I haven't even managed to marry a wife yet, though I do have an ex-wife."

Elara pulled the duvet up to cover herself, propping her head on her hand as she watched him dress. "Anyone looking at you would think you had a secret ex-wife hidden away in Eastford too."

"One was enough to last me a lifetime. You think I'd be stupid enough to make the same mistake twice?"

Elara raised an eyebrow, amused. "How do you know marrying me won't be another form of torture? Once women get married, they're all the same."

Zane buckled his belt and shot her a devastating smile. "I'm perfectly willing. Even if it is torture, I'd suffer gladly."

Slipping into his dress shoes, Zane darted back over to press a quick kiss to her lips. "I have to go. I'll come find you tomorrow if I can."

Zane hurried back to the Wainwright estate, strolling into the grand foyer as if absolutely nothing had happened.

Cyrus Vaughn was just leaving, holding Tobias Wainwright's little girl in his arms. "Zane, where have you been? I didn't see you all night."

Zane didn't miss a beat. "I went out for a walk."

Tobias strolled over, his sharp eyes catching the subtle wrinkles in Zane's shirt. "Were you out ravishing innocent women again?"

Cyrus looked at Zane with exaggerated shock. "Oh my, this is definitely not something for our innocent ears. Come on, Lily, let's go home and sleep."

Cyrus and Tobias They spent most days eating and drinking at their in-laws' place, and Cyrus often helped watch his niece.

"Hey, keep it down, Cyrus," Zane hissed, shooting a nervous glance toward the elders at the card tables.

Cyrus looked Zane up and down. "Man, you look like you're practically radiating spring fever. You're one step away from announcing it to the world. We didn't even need to ask."

"Lily, let's get out of here before your uncle drags us down with him when he gets busted."

Little Lily was already half-asleep, mumbling soft, incoherent baby sounds.

Once Cyrus left, Zane whispered to Tobias, "Is it really that obvious? You can actually tell?"

Tobias sighed. "Go upstairs, take a shower, and change your clothes. You reek of women's perfume."
