The woman’s face was an open book of vulnerability and shock, completely unmasked.
But the moment the car window rolled down, that icy, composed demeanor she always wore slammed right back into place.
Zane Whitaker’s heart ached. A sudden, fierce urge flared up inside him to pull her into his arms and shield her from the world.
"Mr. Whitaker," her crisp, professional voice snapped him back to reality.
Zane cleared his throat. "My assistant mentioned you were looking for me?"
Elara hurriedly stepped out of the car. "Yes. Assistant Yale mentioned you’ve been incredibly busy lately."
"Yes, I've been out of town on a business trip," Zane lied smoothly.
Elara didn’t dare question him, nor did she want to push too hard. "It’s nothing urgent. I just wanted to go over some specifics regarding the project."
"I’m tied up tomorrow. Let’s make it the day after."
"Alright. I’ll coordinate with your office to schedule a time."
Zane watched the taillights of her car fade into the distance, letting out a silent sigh.
What on earth am I going to do with you?
-
Jasper Yale glanced at the man standing frozen like a lovestruck statue and laid on the horn.
Zane frowned and turned back.
Jasper stepped out to open the rear door for him. "Boss, I heard a rumor you were out of town?"
"Keep your mouth shut."
"Ah, the peril of serving a moody tyrant," Jasper muttered.
Zane slid into the back seat. "Close the door, you tactless idiot."
Jasper slammed the door shut and hopped into the driver’s seat. "Boss, I’m starting to suspect you’re hitting early menopause."
"Do you want to get fired?"
