Zane was driving the S680.
Elara frantically wiped the tears from her face.
The window rolled down. She was crying.
"Get in," he said.
"Mr. Whitaker, I..." Elara’s voice broke. She had desperately wanted to hide this from him, yet here he was, seeing her at her absolute lowest.
He was too sharp. Any explanation she offered right now would just sound like a pathetic cover-up.
Perhaps this was simply her fate.
"Get in," Zane repeated, his tone firm.
Elara pulled the door open and slid into the passenger seat.
Zane didn't start the car immediately. He rolled up the windows and handed her two tissues.
Watching the tears streaming uncontrollably down her face, his expression darkened.
He really, really didn't want to let Julian Sterling off the hook.
Elara turned her face away, pressing the tissues hard against her eyes.
"I apologize, Mr. Whitaker," she choked out, entirely unable to suppress her sobs. "I just need a moment."
Knowing the area was swarming with prying eyes, Zane steered the car off the estate's main road and parked near a secluded line of trees.
When Elara’s heavy sobs finally began to subside, she spoke in a low, exhausted voice. "Mr. Whitaker, I'm sorry you had to see that."
"Had a fight with Julian?" Zane asked gently.
Elara nodded slowly. After a long pause, she forced the words out. "Mr. Whitaker... I might be getting a divorce."
Elara chose to lay all her cards on the table. "Even if the Sterling Group won't stand with Vance Properties, the profit margins for our real estate assets are absolutely guaranteed."
"We might be struggling, but you are a titan in the industry. It's high risk, but it's exceptionally high reward."
She was shattered to her core, yet the first thing on her mind was still the company?
Zane finally understood. She was terrified that without the Sterling Group's backing, he would walk away from the deal.
Watching her force herself to be strong, Zane felt a sharp ache in his chest. He desperately wanted to pull her into his arms.
"I'm not walking away," he said quietly. "Regardless of whether you sever ties with the Sterling Group."
"And you don't need to address me so formally. I still consider myself your senior."
Hearing those words, Elara’s tears instantly broke free again.
