The moment the taxi's headlights vanished down the road, the summit plunged into darkness. The distant, faint glow of the streetlamps below did absolutely nothing to cut through the pitch black.

This was drastically different from the romantic overlook Elara had pictured. The suffocating darkness made the whole situation feel... illicit.

"Zane, isn't it a bit too dark?" she asked nervously. "Should we go stand closer to the road?"

"Turn around."

Elara turned. The bustling streets they had just left were now a sprawling sea of glittering lights, stretching out endlessly like a masterpiece woven from gold and neon.

The air up here was crisp. The cool night wind brushed against her skin, so refreshing that a smile naturally tugged at her lips. "It's breathtaking," she breathed.

Zane raised his glass toward her, and Elara tapped her mug against his. The beer was cheap, but the atmosphere was priceless.

She had played the perfect Mrs. Sterling for too long, and now she was under immense pressure as President Vance. Tonight, shrouded in the dark, that suffocating tension finally melted away.

A radiant smile broke across her face. "Zane, where's this 'ocean view' you promised?"

The ocean he had described was currently nothing but a massive void of blackness.

Zane smoothly lied, "The weather must be bad tonight."

Elara looked up at the sky. It was completely clear, blazing with millions of stars.

Elara gave him a deadpan look.

Zane stared back.

"Is this some new type of dry humor?" Elara asked.

"It's called lying through my teeth."

Elara burst out laughing. "Here's to you, Zane."

"And to you, for humoring me and climbing a mountain in the dark." They clinked their glasses again.

There were bugs out in the night air, so Zane pulled a bottle of bug spray from his pocket. Elara looked at him in disbelief.
