Zane felt a flash of awkwardness, clearing his throat. “Not... not necessarily.”
What was Elara supposed to say to that?
Say, Wow, what good habits you have?
Or perhaps, Wow, you sure are sturdy?
Out on this pitch-black hill, a man and an age-appropriate woman having this conversation was just...
It felt entirely inappropriate, like they were two lovers having an illicit affair.
Elara stammered, “Mr. Whitaker, I had a little to drink and lost my filter. Please don’t take offense.”
Zane felt his own response had been pathetic. He added, “Everyone has different habits. I just don’t have that one.”
Elara snapped her head toward him in sheer shock...
Internally, Zane face-palmed. What kind of absolute garbage was he spewing?
“Mr... Mr. Whitaker, let’s just hurry down the hill...”
It was the middle of the night. A man and a woman alone discussing this was beyond inappropriate. Elara quickly picked up her pace.
“Ah—” Elara’s foot caught on something, and she stumbled. Zane’s reflexes kicked in instantly, his hand shooting out to grab her arm.
“Are you okay?!”
Zane was answered by sharp, hissing intakes of breath.
Elara wanted to put on a brave face and say she was fine, but the pain in her ankle was blinding.
Zane immediately dropped to a crouch, gently pressing around her ankle while turning on his phone’s flashlight to inspect it.
“Try moving your ankle a little.”
Elara shifted it. She could move it, but it hurt like hell.
“Hold onto me. I’m going to take your shoe off.”
Obediently, Elara gripped Zane’s shoulder. With her palm pressed tight against the fabric of his shirt, she could feel the heat radiating from the man, along with the solid strength of the muscles underneath.
The man slipped off her high heel, holding her foot in his hands, gently rotating it while continuously asking how it felt.
“It’s likely a sprain. The bone is probably fine, but we’ll go straight to the hospital for an X-ray once we get down.”
Zane slipped her strappy heel back on, held her arm firmly, and stood up.
