"I know, I know," Zane replied smoothly.
Having finished her opening monologue, Elena cut straight to the chase. "I heard the second Neville daughter is back in town."
Alarm bells instantly went off in Zane's head. He knew exactly how desperate his mother was to secure an alliance with The Nevilles. He quickly said, "Mom, she's too old for me."
"And you're a spring chicken? You're thirty-four; she's thirty."
Zane looked down at his plate. "I actually think the Grant girl isn't bad."
"Which Grant girl?" Elena frowned. "That illegitimate one?"
Zane, completely oblivious to the high-society gossip, bluffed his way through. "I think she's great."
"Are you blind?" Elena snapped. "Are there no decent women left in this city?"
Elena knew exactly who Cynthia was. She was publicly touted as an adopted daughter, but why would they suddenly adopt? She was Gregory Grant's illegitimate child, and God only knew what gutter her mother had crawled out of.
The girl had been shipped overseas back in high school.
No one knew exactly why.
With the world being as chaotic as it was, Elena despised the idea of bringing in a girl who had lived abroad since she was a teenager. It screamed cultural disconnect and guaranteed she'd be a terrible mother to the next generation.
"Go on, explain to me exactly what makes her so 'great'."
"If she actually had any brains, why would they have to send her overseas? Do we not have elite high schools and universities right here in the city?"
Zane had no clue about any of this. He had just thrown a name out to stall.
Elena was fuming at his sheer incompetence. "After all these years, your taste in women hasn't improved one bit!"
"I don't know where you get this blindness from."
"That Grant girl has zero maternal backing and zero intelligence. How is she presentable? Is she even pretty?"
Zane thought to himself, *Not really. And she has the manners of a street brawler.*
