The memory came flooding back. She had missed the podium by a single stride. Possessing the fierce competitive streak of youth, she had been so frustrated she had cried.

Julian had rushed down from the bleachers, pulling her into a tight embrace to comfort her. He had even bought her a massive bouquet of pink roses—so extravagant she hadn't dared bring them home.

To be young was such a beautiful thing.

If only people could remain as they were in the beginning.

Elara smiled faintly. "It felt like the end of the world back then, but now, I barely even remember it."

Zane felt a pang of melancholy. During their college years, she and Julian had been the ultimate fairytale—the wealthy heiress and the aristocratic heir, the couple everyone envied.

Remembering the true purpose of this walk, Zane cleared his throat. "Elara, I need to apologize to you for what happened that night."

Elara immediately interjected, "Mr. Whitaker, I had too much to drink. I spoke without thinking. Please don't hold it against me."

Wait, what?

She wasn't angry anymore, even before he explained?

Zane was momentarily stunned. Then it clicked. It was about the acquisition. She didn't want to jeopardize their professional relationship. His chest tightened with guilt; he was the one who had crossed the line.

"That takeout order actually belonged to the guy upstairs. The delivery driver brought it to the wrong floor. I had no idea what was inside and assumed you ordered it. That's what caused the entire misunderstanding. Either way, the apology should come from me."

Elara froze, genuinely shocked. It had all been a ridiculous mix-up. Zane hadn't been propositioning her at all.

A massive weight lifted off her shoulders. She truly didn't want to sell her body unless it was an absolute last resort.

"Then I really misunderstood you, Zane. I should be the one apologizing."

Zane offered a self-deprecating smile. "Believe it or not, I do have some morals."

"I've always been grateful for your help, and I have immense respect for you. My brain was just muddled from the alcohol."

For Elara, nothing was more critical than keeping this bridge intact.

Zane understood her underlying anxiety. Regardless of her motivations, the air was finally cleared.
