Chapter 28: Walk Home

Jinx’s P.O.V.

“Hey Em,” Deidra said as she answered her phone. Her back might be to me, but I saw her checking me out before she turned around. I almost grabbed her phone and tossed it out the damn window.

Just to stop the interruption.

Because f***k! We were having a moment. Both during and after that kiss. And what a fu.cking kiss that was. I’ve never had a kiss that felt like that. Not even earlier in the store. That sh.it was mind–blowing, yeah, but this time… It was fu.cking everything. I was lost. In a fu.cking kiss. That’s just… it’s fu.cking ridiculous.

I’m a bada.s biker for f***k’s sake. How many times have I said I was never going to settle down? One fu.cking kiss can’t change my mind.

But there’s so much more between me and Thorn than just that kiss…

“Sorry Em, I know, I know,” Deidra’s voice pulled me back to the present before I could start getting lost in my memories. “I thought I would be back by how. I know. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to worry

you.”

Worry her? How late is it? How long were we making out for?

f***k, I feel like a damn teenager.

“Uhhh,” Deidra said awkwardly. She glanced back at me and blushed when she saw me already looking at her. “I, uhm, I think I can manage the walk back to my cabin, Em, but thank you.” She said, and then frowned at whatever Emma replied with. Yes, I will call you as soon as I get back. It’ll literally be like 5 minutes, if that.” Then there was another pause. “Fine, fine. Yes. Okay. Bye.”

Deidra blew out a breath as she turned around to face me again. Her face was getting redder by the second, and she couldn’t look me in the eyes. It was cute. I liked the shiver of interest that moved down my spine. Here I have Deidra Hartman in my room. The woman whose given me sh.it for as long as I can remember. And now, instead of yelling and glaring at me… she looks like one move from me, and she’ll crumble in all the best ways.

“Uhm, I–I should probably get going,” she finally said

All I could manage was a nod of acknowledgment. did at least open the door for her. I followed her to the front door and helped her into her coat. Then I started putting my boots on as she put

hers on.

“What are you doing?” She asked me, her eyes accusing me of something. What, I have no idea.

“Walking you to your cabin,” I replied as I finished tying my boots and stood up.

“Why? I can walk myself-”

I put my finger over her lips, stopping her from finishing her bratty thoughts. A blush coated her cheeks, making me smirk. I kept my finger there for a moment too long, loving the feeling of her

plump lips against any fu.cking part of me.

“I’m walking ya, Tiger Lily,” I told her. “End of story.”

Deidra frowned at me and rolled her eyes before opening the door.

“Stop it with all your stupid nicknames already,” she grumbled as she walked out into the freezing

night. “I’m not part of your MC, ya know.”

I snorted out a laugh.

“If you were, your road–name would be Thorn,” I told her. “Because you’re a thorn in my side.”

“Then what’s with Lily–pad and Tiger Lily, and… what else was it that you used to call me?” She

asked, throwing me a look as she wrapped her arms around herself.

I threw my arm over her shoulders, pulling her to my side and trying to act as nonchalant about it as possible. Thankfully, Deidra didn’t fight it. In fact, she snuggled in more. It made a huge grin

break out on my face.

“Let’s see,” I replied. “There’s Lotus, Daisy, Rose, Tulip, Sunflower, Bluebell, Gardenia, Marigold, and my personal favorite, Wisteria.”

Deidra rolled her eyes, but I saw her cheeks get redder.

“Why can’t you just be normal?” She grumbled.

I shrugged.

“Not in my DNA I guess,” I muttered.

“I suppose that’s probably for the better,” she said, surprising me.

“Really?” I asked, glancing down at her, but she was focused on the cleared path in front of her.

“Yeah, I mean, who wants to be normal?” She replied with a shrug before looking up at me with a smile. A smile so huge, bright, and genuine that it took my breath away. “You’re part of a motorcycle club. Grew up in it and everything. That s kind of really exciting if you ask me.”

“Uh, y–you really think so?” I asked her.

“Yeah,” she said, looking back at the path. “It was always just me and my parents. I never knew what it was like to be surrounded by family, but I bet it felt… safe. I bet there’s never a dull moment,” she said, trying to push out a laugh.

But I know Deidra. I know how alone and out–casted she felt even before her parents died. And I vividly remember the panic I felt when I heard they died and no one could find her. I’m also pretty sure that Deidra has felt pretty lonely since then. Even though she had Deb. Theo was a sh.it boyfriend, I’m not counting him as anyone in her life Sophie neither.

“You can come around more if you want,” I blurted.

Sh.it, was that too much?

“The club?” She asked, shooting me a wide–eyed look.

We just made it to the front door of her cabin. She turned to look at me. Her eyes were assessing, probably trying to see if I was messing with her.

“You take care of my son on an almost daily basis, Rosebud,” I told her. “And my brothers seem to love you, so yeah. Come over whenever you want. We can be… friends. You can be family with us.”

Deidra’s lips parted. She inhaled, but nothing came out. Then she looked away from me.

“You can’t say stuff like that,” she said, refusing to meet my eyes. “We’re supposed to go back to

normal after this, remember?”

“Why can’t we have a new normal?” I asked with a shrug.

“Because Waylen will get his hopes up,” she said, her eyes finally snapping to me.

“Waylen’s or yours?” I teased her.

Which just pi.ssed her off more.

“Excuse me? You think I would ever get my hopes up about you? I’m a very logical person, Jinx, you

know that,” she practically spat at me.

I chuckled as I stepped closer to her, pretty much pinning her to the door.

“Brixton,” I said.

Deidra gave me a confused look.

“What?” She breathed out.

“You,” I said as I reached up to pinch her chin and til her head back. “Can call me Brixton. Or Brix. Whatever you want.”

“B–b–but… that’s your… real name,” she whispered, like she would be in trouble for knowing that simple fact. It made me laugh loudly, and she blushed. I love the way she blushes.

“Only you are allowed to call me that,” I told her.

“B–because I’m your fake ol‘ lady?” she asked.

“Because I’m accepting your challenge,” I said, not confirming or denying it.

“My what now?” She asked, confused, making me short.

“You’re such a dork,” I teased her.

Then I let her go, instead of kissing her like I really wanted to. I took the key from her hand and

unlocked the door. Then I ushered her inside. All while she looked at me like I’d sprouted a second

head.

“Wait, Jinx-”

“Ah!” I cut her off.

Deidra swallowed hard before starting again.

“B–Brixton… what challenge are you talking about?” She asked.

“You’ll just have to see, my little wisteria,” I replied as I set her key down on the little table next to the door. “Lock this when I leave, alright?”

“I mean, obviously, but-”

“And Waylen and I will pick you up tomorrow around 11,” I told her, cutting her off so she couldn’t keep asking. “We’re all hitting up the slopes in the next town over. You don’t gotta ski, but you gotta come if you’re gonna be my ol‘ lady.”

“Okay, fine, but-” She said as she walked closer to me, but I was already heading out the door. “Brixton!” She called after me, her voice heavy with annoyance.

“Oh, sh.it, I almost forgot,” I said as I turned back around. Deidra nearly ran right into me.

“What?” she asked.

“This,” I replied before pulling her flush against my body and pressing our lips together.

I kept this kiss short. Had to. Otherwise, I wasn’t leaving. I shouldn’t rush things with Deidra. She’ll fu.cking bolt if I do. I just have to take this opportunity by the balls and fu.cking make it mine. So, I let her go. I told her good night and kissed her head. And then I practically ran back home before I could talk myself into going back to her.

And of course, everyone was in the living room when I got back.

“How’d it go?” From Mom.

“What’d she say?” From Birdie.

“Looked like things were going well,” from Adam.

“Let the man walk through the damn door first,” this from Dad. “She say yes?”

I gave him a flat look before looking at my mom and sister.

“She said yes, and I need help,” I admitted.

They shared a look of shock before looking at me again.

“I told her to call me Brixton,” I told them. All of their faces morphed into shock. Dad’s jaw hung

open for a moment. It was a ripple of awkward, shocked silence.

“Sorry, you what?” Birdie was the first to speak.

“It just slipped out, but then it… It felt right. I didn’t want to take it back.” I rushed out.

Slowly, a smile spread on both Mom’s and Birdie’s faces. Then they squealed and Birdie clapped her hands together. Dad and Adam winced from the noise.

“Finally!” Birdie practically screamed.

“Look, just…” I trailed off, sighing before finally saying what I knew I had to. “Just help me. Please?”

“Told ya that you’d know when you met the one,” Dad muttered.

I ignored him and kept looking at my mom and sister. I’m going to need all the help I can get if I’m going to make it work this time. And I’m taking the chance. The one I never thought I’d get. There’s no going back now. No matter how much I try to tell myself that this couldn’t work. I have to make it work. I fu.cking gave Deidra a claim without her realizing it.

Now I just have to raise those hopes of hers.
