Chapter 29: Crazy Girl

What in the hell just happened?
No seriously. What was that?
I mean, the first kiss was for show. I started it. The sales l.ady pi.ssed me off and I reacted. Jinx
just got… caught up in it. That’s all.
The second kiss in his bedroom was different. I wanted it. My original intention was to tell him I wanted to fool around while we played pretend. So that kiss was steamy, se.xy, and leading to somewhere if Emma hadn’t interrupted us.
But that last kiss? The one where Jinx scooped me up into his arms, planted his lips on mine, and pulled away too soon? That kiss was different. It felt… different.
And now my heat is pounding in my chest. I have to call Emma. Half because I need to talk to someone about all of this. The other half because she was damn near ready to call the police when I hadn’t answered before. So, that’s exactly what I did. I dialed Emma as I walked back to my bedroom. She answered on the second ring.
“Oh my god, tell me everything!” She squealed.
“I–I don’t even know where to start,” I admitted.
“Uhm, from the beginning, duh,” she replied with a laugh. “Tell me all the dets, girl!”
So, I did. I told her how I showed up nervous and asked Jinx if I looked okay like a total id.iot. I told her how he tripped and how we ended up on the couch. To which she laughed at and tried to say that Jinx did it on purpose. I know he didn’t, because every time he and I are too close for more than a few minutes, something like that happens.
“Okay, so did something like that happen again?” Emma asked me. “Another little accident?”
“Well… not really,” I mumbled,
“So, what if he did do it on purpose? Ya know, to try to get closer to you or something,” she offered.
“No, I don’t think that’s it,” I said as I peeked out my window at Jinx’s cabin. The kitchen light is on. I wonder if Jinx is having more pie… “I mean, he had no problem coaxing me into kissing him in his
room.”
“Wait, what??” Emma asked excitedly.
So, I launched right back into the story. Told her how well dinner went, how his family made me

feel so welcome, and how adorable it was to watch Jinx tuck Waylen into bed. She gushed, and it
wasn’t helpful for my already treacherous heart. Then I got to the part where I totally chickened out on my demands.
“Wait, you didn’t tell him that you wanted to explore each other’s bodies during this time and still got a kiss?” she asked.
“I just ended up telling him yes to the whole thing, and he said that we should seal it with a kiss.” I
rushed out. “I told him no at first, but he was making good points and all know I wanted to kiss him again. So yeah, it just… happened.”
“Oh my god, and?” she asked.
“And then you interrupted us,” I grumbled. “He had just grabbed my butt too,” I muttered thoughtfully.
I walked to the bathroom to take my makeup off and put my hair up as Emma squealed on the other end of the phone. I put her on speakerphone so I could get to work on my bedtime routine. She was going on and on about how this totally meant that Jinx has a thing for me.
“No he doesn’t,” I cut into her rambling. I had to keep denying it. If I didn’t, then I might let her convince me she’s right. And then I’d have to go home looking like an even bigger fool than I already do to the whole town. I’d never be able to look Jinx in the eye again.
“Okay, right, so what happened when he walked you home?” She asked. “I’m assuming he did…?”
“He did,” I replied. “He told me we’re going skiing tomorrow with the family.”
“Oh, fun.”
“And he did kiss me goodnight, but it was quick,” I added. “But I also got a forehead kiss too. If that matters.”
“It so matters.”
“Oh, and he, uhm, told me to call him by his real name,” I finished, rushing the words out, hoping Emma wouldn’t want to dwell on them.
Oh, how foolish of me.
“Sorry, he what?” Emma said.
“Em, please don’t make a big deal out of it,” I groaned as I changed out of my dress and into an oversized T–shirt.
“How can I not?!” She asked incredulously. “In all the books I read, that means a biker is claiming you. In a way. They only ever let their mommas and their ol‘ ladies call them by their birth names.”
“Well, I’m his fake ol‘ lady,” I mumbled.

“Not the same,” she argued. “He didn’t have to do that.”
“Em, I really can’t make a big deal out of this,” I told her, forcing out a shaky laugh.
“What are you so afraid of?” She asked, surprising me.
“A–afraid of?” I repeated, too stunned to give her an actual answer.

“Yeah, I mean, I know that Theo was a raging a.sshat,” she replied. “Doesn’t sound to me like he was ever that great, but you went along with it. Yet, you seem to understand that not all men are him, so it can’t possibly be because of an ex. You’ve told me about how him being part of an MC doesn’t bother you at all. So, can’t be that. You two have known each other practically your whole lives. So, it’s not like he’s a stranger. So what is it? Why are you so afraid to admit that the man
might have feelings for you?”
For a moment, I was at a loss for words.
“W–what do y–you mean??” I stammered incredulously. “He’s Jinx. We’ve never gotten along. He’s never even dated anyone. He doesn’t settle down. Plus, he has enough drama. I don’t even know
what the deal is with him and his baby momma right now. And this is Jinx we’re talking about. He
doesn’t date or take women seriously. This vacation is as good as it will ever get between me and
him. Once we get home, he’ll go back to normal. Back to the club with all the bunnies running
around naked. Back to his marvelous bachelor lifestyle. I can’t get my hopes up with him! I’ll get
crushed! And how stupid would I look then??”
Emma sighed heavily, as if she were getting nowhere with me. Which is strange, because that’s
how I feel about her right now.
“Alright, so we take things one day at a time then,” she finally said in a gentle and supportive voice. “Your vacay was about relaxing and letting go for once in your life, so do that. Just… do what feels right when you’re with him.”
“I–I will,” I replied, feeling all kinds of nervous.
“Hey, maybe tomorrow you can tell Jinx that Deb told you that someone canceled the venue,” she said. “Maybe he knows who did it and can tell you why and how they even knew.”
“That’s not a bad idea,” I mumbled as I pulled back my blankets.
“You could take the opportunity to thank him for all the things he’s done for you too,” she added.
“Yeah, okay Emma,” I replied.
“I’m just saying,” she said innocently.
“Okay, well, I’m going to bed,” I told her. “I’ll talk to you tomorrow.”
“Call me as soon as you get back!” She said. “Good night!”

“Good night,” I replied, and hung up before she could su.ck me into more conversation.
I went to the window to make sure the curtains were shut tight. I also wanted to peek at the house again. The kitchen light was off, but there were a few other lights on. I didn’t see anyone in the windows, not that I was expecting to or anything.
After making sure the sun wasn’t going to wake me in the morning, I crawled into bed. I grabbed my phone to plug it into the charger. Apparently, I had gotten a few texts while I was on the phone with Emma and hadn’t noticed. A few of them are from Deb.
Deb: Just wanted to let ya know that the café is doing wonderful without you. No fires yet!
Deb: Hope you’re having a good time, sweetie!
Deb: Don’t forget that it’s okay to make a bad choice once or twice in your life.
I smiled and rolled my eyes. I texted her that I’d call her tomorrow before moving on to the next message. I had a couple from Theo and a handful were from Sophie. All from within the time that I was with Jinx and his family until about 20 minutes ago.
Theo: Can we just talk please?
Theo: Look, I’m sorry, but please forgive Sophie. She misses you a lot.
Theo: At least respond to us. We’re worried about you.
Is he fu.cking serious? They’re still at this? Still acting like they’re the victims?
I rolled my eyes before seeing what Sophie had to say. And man, there was a lot.
Sophie: Are you seriously ignoring my calls still?
Sophie: Did you leave town??
Sophie: Deidra! How could you leave town without telling me?!
Sophie: Deidra, this isn’t funny anymore! Where did you go??
Sophie: Seriously Deidra? Running away isn’t going to make anyone chase you.
Sophie: You really need to grow up Deidra. This is getting old.
Sophie: Come on Deidra! Who’s supposed to be my maid of honor!? Get over this already!
Sophie: If you aren’t back before my wedding, I will come find you.
Oh my god. Holy sh.it. What the heck is her problem?
I shook my head, refusing to reply. Instead, I screenshotted it all and sent it to Deb. Then I blocked Sophie and Theo. Deb replied immediately that I should file a restraining order as soon as I get back. I told her I’d think about it and that I was going to bed. Right when I was about to set my

phone down, another text came through. This one, making all the anger melt right off me and a
smile spread across my face.
Jinx: I had a wonderful time tonight, Lotus. You looked gorgeous, and my family loved you. Can’t wait to see you tomorrow and really get started on my “challenge“. Sweet dreams my prickly
little rose.
Yeah, not getting my hopes up is going to be very hard.
