Chapter 31: The Woman of Many Wonders

My plan was going wonderfully already. Okay, it was a plan we all came up with together. A stupid plan, but one I was following through with anyway. It wasn’t that stupid, honestly. Just… I think it’s going to take more than donuts and cute nicknames to make Deidra fall for me. I don’t even need her to fall in love with me yet, I just need her to take me seriously. I can wiggle my way into her heart with time, but I need to use this chance to raise those hopes of hers.

So, Waylen and I got up bright and early, like normal and went to the donut place in town. We surprised Deidra, and f***k was I happy that she hadn’t gotten ready yet. I tried not to pay attention to the fact that she didn’t have a bra on, but I noticed. I don’t think Deidra caught on though. She was too busy being nervous about having me close. And I ate that sh.it up.

I was having too much fun teasing Deidra. Way too much fun watching her squirm. I never thought it would be this fun to do, to see. Okay, maybe I suspected, or rather, I hoped it would be this much fun. She blushed fiercely every time I touched her of whispered in her ear. The way she glared at me every time I called her a different flower. It was all adorable and had me bubbling with

excitement.

However, I noticed that she was quiet. I wanted to ask sooner, but we were constantly around everyone. I had a feeling she may have been a little freaked out by the attention I was giving her. I was lying on thick, and when I didn’t have to. It was part of the plan, but I would have been all over her anyway. Having my arm around Deidra, holding her hand, having her close like that just felt right.

Guess it has been a long time coming.

Before I could get an answer out of my little thorn though, that fu.cking bit.ch interrupted us. The fact that she sent Deidra stumbling backward pi.ssed me right the f***k off. I was actually about to literally shove the bi.tch away when Deidra started yelling at her. I wanted to step in, handle it for her. But I couldn’t. Watching Deidra get all pi.ssed off and protective over my son was by far the se.xiest thing I’d ever seen.

I was surprised that Deidra wanted to ski. This will be Waylen’s first time, but not mine. I played it off like it was because it may not be my first time, but I’m not that great. Thought that I could pretend to just be a natural. Thought it would impress Deidra in some way.

Oh, how wrong I fucking was.

“Your girl is running circles around you,” Adam said as we watched Deidra go down the slope again with Waylen, Drew, and Chance right behind her.

She taught them how to ski. Said f***k this to the man who was supposed to be instructing us. Not literally, but as soon as he walked away, Deidra gave more tips to everyone before showing all the boys how to ski. Then she took them all on the bunny slope the first time. Now they’re all fu.cking professionals.

“Can’t believe you couldn’t even get all the way down once without tripping over yourself,” Adam added, snorting under his breath.

“Shut up,” I grunted, watching as Deidra came to a halt at the bottom of the slope with the three boys right behind her.

“You should be happy that your parents and sister aren’t out here to see this,” he said, trying not to laugh and failing.

“If you don’t tell them, the boys will,” I grumbled. “And if the boys don’t, Thorn will.”

“She sure is full of surprises man,” he commented.

“Shoulda known she’d know how to ski,” I mumbled

“Hey, you know this place has a sauna and a pool?” Adam asked.

I turned my head to raise a brow at him.

“I know the boys are gonna be out here for a while,” he said. “Maybe you could talk Deidra into the sauna or something.”

“Are you insane?” I asked flatly.

“Don’t think she’d go for it?” he asked.

“Oh, I think she’d go for it,” I replied as I looked back at the woman. “But I’ll fu.cking crumble seeing her in nothing but a robe. If there are other males in the room… You’re just asking for a disaster to happen, Adam.”

“Fair,” he said with a nod. “Maybe you two can go get warmed up with a coffee or something.”

I looked him up and down.

“Are you trying to give us some time alone?” I asked

“I’m trying to help you, man, but you ain’t taking the bait,” he replied with a laugh.

“Help you with what?”

Adam and I turned to see Deidra standing in front of us. The boys were behind her, holding their skis and talking animatedly about going down again. Deidra was waiting for us to answer, looking between us with growing suspicion. She’s so damn cute in her little getup. Of course, her black snowpants and light blue winter jacket are pretty generic, but she’s got a cute little blue beanie on with her curls sticking out wildly from it. she look cute as f***k with them on. Her hazel eyes are so bright and her cheeks are flushed from

all the excitement.

Wow, she’s so damn pretty.

“Did someone hit on you while I was with the kids?” she asked me when neither of us answered her. “You really do need protection everywhere you go. Who woulda thought that a biker would need a bodyguard?”

Adam fully laughed at that.

“There was this one chick eyeing him, but then she noticed him staring at you and gave it up,” he told her, and I shot him a glare. “Anyway,” he said, ignoring me and smiling at Deidra. “Jinx asked if the food was good inside. He thought maybe you were hungry or wanted to warm up.”

“And that’s what you were trying to help him with?” She asked, like she didn’t believe it. Because it

was bullsh.it. But I was jumping on board anyway.

“Yeah, Daffodil, you look cold,” I said as I wrapped my arms around her, pulling her against me.

“But Dad!” Waylen whined. “I don’t wanna go in yet.”

“Maybe we could-”

“Uncle Adam said he’d stay with you guys,” I cut Deidra off to tell my son.

For a moment, Waylen looked like he wanted to argue. Then his little eyes took in the scene; me

holding Deidra in my arms like a real lover. He might not know about the plan, but he’s smart enough to see that I’m acting differently with Deidra

“Okay, have fun Dra!” he said excitedly. “Make sure my dad doesn’t trip over his own feet on the way

there.”

That earned bouts of laughter from Adam and a snort from Deidra. At least she tried to hide it for

my sake. My fucking kid continues to embarrass me in front of Deidra. But I think she likes it. I

think it makes her see me as normal, relatable. It softens her up and I love it.

“Come on,” I said to her. “You gotta stay close so I don’t trip.”

I grabbed both our skis and tucked them under one arm. Deidra wrapped both her arms around my free one. I’m not sure if she realizes she did it on her own, but I’m not going to risk saying sh.it. It felt fu.cking amazing to have her wrap herself around me like that. Like she belonged there. She rambled on and on about how much fun she was having with the boys and how funny they were as we walked to the building. She even mentioned how nice it was to see Waylen with friends, even if

they were his cousins.

“You noticed that Way doesn’t have any friends?” I asked her as we turned our skis in. I’m not going back out, and if I can help it, Deidra won’t either. We can go back out and watch Waylen if she

wants, but I want her close to me for the rest of the day.

“Yeah I’ve noticed,” she replied, sounding offended. You think he’d seek me out almost daily if he

had friends?”

“I think he still would, yeah,” I mumbled as we walked towards the small café inside the building. Mom, Dad, Birdie, and Rosie are here somewhere. Probably in the play area for the kids, or the actual restaurant on the other side of the place.

“Well, maybe I just notice more, I guess,” Deidra replied as she sat down at a small circular table in the back corner. “And Waylen talks to me. He says he doesn’t get along with anyone at school. I

don’t blame him.”

“What do you mean?” I asked as I furrowed my brow.

Deidra looked up at me. Her face changed to match mine. Then her cheeks turned pink.

“You mean… you don’t know?” she asked.

I let out a forced laugh as I rapped my knuckles on the table.

“Let me go order for us, and then you can explain to me why my son loves you more than me,” I

said.

I turned to walk away without waiting for her to respond. I ordered us both a coffee, just the way she likes hers. Then I got a couple of muffins, her favorite. Deidra was chewing on her lip when I returned to the table. She sat up a little straighter as I set her coffee and muffin down.

“Thank you, and just for the record, he doesn’t love me more than you,” she rushed out before my a.ss was even planted on the seat.

I gave her a look as I sat and leaned back in my seat. Deidra squirmed, and that made me want to drag the moment out. So I did. Until she started rambling again.

“He just… trusts me more,” she started. “He says I listen and that I’m always on his side. And oh my god, I’m making this worse. He does love you. He tells me all the time. And I understand your side too. Waylen is a wild kid and-”

“Hey,” I said, stopping her rambling and reaching out to place my hand on hers as I leaned on the table. “It’s alright. I’m not mad, just… frustrated. It upsets me that my son doesn’t have any friends.”

There she goes, biting that pillowy lip again. Maybe this conversation will lead to something. Even if I can’t make Deidra catch feelings for me during this trip, maybe I can increase our communication when we get back home. Anything can do to try to worm my way into her life.

“I want to know what he says to you,” I told her. “If that’s alright.”
