ra,” Waylen said, standing beside his father, looking like a mini–version of the man,
holding a large pink box in his arms. “Don’t mind Dad and his stupid nicknames,” he added, rolling his eyes. His attitude made me snort. It was hard not to when a seven–year–old talked to you like he
was a grown up.
“You guys are early,” I said as I stepped to the side to allow them to come in.
“We brought donuts!” Waylen said excitedly as he held up a big pink box he was carrying.
“Oh, thank you,” I replied as I grabbed them and walked to the small kitchen table.
“We went into town this morning to get some for everyone. He wanted you to have some too,” Jinx told me. “Tried telling him there was no way you were gonna eat a dozen donuts to yourself
though.”
I smiled and turned my attention back to Waylen.
“You’re the most thoughtful man in my life, Waylen, thank you,” I said as I pulled him in for a big hug.
Jinx grunted behind me, but I ignored him.
“What about me?” he asked, apparently not liking being ignored. “I paid for them. Don’t I get something, Sunflower?”
I turned my head to raise a brow at him.
“You know there are more plants out there than just flowers,” I grumbled.
“Like a peace lily, or musa aeae, or monstera, or ferm, or-”
“Okay, I get it, you know plants,” I cut him off.
Jinx smiled at me and I tried not to act like I melted Waylen, not caring about our little bickering,

ran right for the donuts. Thankfully, they won’t go to waste if he’s going to help me eat them. But Jinx’s eyes were pinned on me. He looked almost… predatory. And I couldn’t move. Like I was hypnotized.
“None of those have the same ring to it though, do they?” he said as he stepped closer, invading my space. I didn’t move, but the smell of his cologne invaded my nose. Cedar, something warm and ma.nly. Something safe. “But I’ll always remember your favorite,” he whispered, bringing his lips to my ear. “African violets. Because they bloom all year round with the right care, and bring a little pop of color to your home.”
My face flamed as Jinx leaned back. He winked at me before joining his son at my table. All I could do was stare at him with my jaw on the floor and my heart hammering in my chest.
He was right. African violets are my favorite. They’re kind of basic, but so damn pretty. And he was
right. I like them because they bloom all year round with the right care. And they’re easy to take
care of. That little thing about them bringing a little pop of color to your home is something I say to
customers when they ask about good houseplants. Not that it happens very often.
Did Jinx overhear me say that to a customer before?
“You want me to make you some coffee, Marigold? Jinx asked, snapping me from my thoughts.
“I want you to quit with the nicknames,” I grumbled as I walked to the coffee pot. I was in the middle of making a pot when they knocked on the door.
“You’re cranky before your coffee,” Jinx teased me as he leaned on the counter next to me, taking a bite of the donut in his hand. “I’ll have to remember that.”
Then his eyes slowly dragged down my body, drinking in every inch of me as he licked the crumbs from his lips. My body reacted, tensing and shifting towards him. I squirmed under those blue–green eyes, and he loved it. The co.ckiest smirk I’ve ever seen plastered on his face as he winked at me. I was sure I was as red as a damn tomato right now, but I chose to ignore it. The best I could, anyway.
“Sit,” Jinx whispered in my ear before kissing my head. “Eat. I’ll bring you your coffee.”
So, I did. And Jinx brought me my coffee minutes later. Exactly how I like it; two sugars, four cream. Then he sat next to me at the table. Waylen carried the conversation, but Jinx rested his hand on my knee under the table the whole time. Like it belonged there. Like this was all normal.
And I did nothing about it.
My mind was reeling the whole time I got dressed, as we walked to their cabin, the whole fu.cking car ride to the slopes. I just couldn’t stop thinking about all the weirdness. Jinx’s change towards me, his use of more cutesy nicknames, how he knew my favorite plant, how he knew just how I liked my coffee, how he grabbed me my favorite drink and snack from the gas station we stopped at without me asking.

It was fu.cking weird. I didn’t understand it. I wanted to ask, but I couldn’t force the words out. I
was too shocked, too confused. Everyone else acted like it was normal. Like Jinx’s arm around me
in the backseat was an everyday occurrence. Like I had been part of the family for years.
And I think that’s mostly why I struggled to say something. Because it felt good to be welcomed. It
felt good to not be alone. And it felt damn good to be with family. Even if they weren’t mine. They
made me feel like I was a part of them. Even if it was just for the holidays. It was nice to be around
it after just being me and Deb for so long.
I wish Deb were here too… She’d love this. But she’s at home, all alone. At least I got the Roth’s
even if it wasn’t planned. God, should I have even left?
“You gonna tell me what’s going on in there, Lily–pad?” Jinx asked, tapping the middle of my
forehead.
I frowned and swatted his hand away, making him chuckle. We were standing in line to rent skis for Waylen. I wasn’t sure if Jinx planned to ski, but I did. I could use the adrenaline rush. Plus, I don’t
like the idea of Waylen going without one of us.
“Nothing is going on,” I replied. “I don’t know what you mean.”
“Oh, really?” Jinx said with a laugh. He’d just taken a breath to say more when someone interrupted
“Oh, hey! Sick cut!” Some bleached–blonde bimbo said as she literally burst between us, sending me stumbling back a step. Her eyes were on Jinx like she hadn’t just pushed me out of the way to get to him. “Haven’t heard of your MC, but I know bikers,” she said, making a show of checking Jinx out as she trailed a finger down his cut. “You’re pretty se.xy-”
“Uh, hello?!?” I practically shouted, getting her attention.
She gave me a displeased look before plastering on a fake smile.
“Awh, is this your sister? OMG! Is this your son??” She gushed when she saw Waylen standing next to me. “He’s like a mini version of you. So cute,” she said as she bent down to… I don’t know, ruffle
Waylen’s hair or something.
I put my arm out, stopping her and shuffling Waylen behind me as he glared at the lady. She glared at me as she stood up straight. Her eyes raked down my body and a quiet scoff left her lips.
“Your sister seems… protective-”
“Not his sister bit.ch, his ol‘ lady,” I cut her off. “You do know what that means, right? Since you’ve
been with so many bikers.”
The girl glared at me and clicked her tongue.
“I don’t see a property patch on-”

“I’m literally going to shove my property patch up your a.ss if you don’t move along,” I cut her off again. “We came here to spend the day as a family, and you’re ruining it. If you want to be a club bunny so badly, find a single biker. If you continue to stick around, not only is my ol‘ man going to hurt your feelings until you run away crying, but I’ll make sure you run away bleeding too. You’re choice.”
The girl looked from me to Jinx, who was beaming at me with pride and heat in his eyes.
“You heard her,” he said as he pushed past the girl to wrap his arm around my shoulders. “And if you knew bikers the way you say you do, you’d know not to approach them the way you just did. You’re lucky I don’t cut off your fu.cking fingers for touchin‘ my cut.”
The girl paled at that.
“Run along,” I told her, and man, she did not hesitate. I rolled my eyes as I watched her go before turning to face Jinx. His arm fell to my waist, but he didn’t let me go. “This really happens to you everywhere you go no matter what.” I stated, and he nodded. “No wonder you had to beg me to protect you.” That earned me a familiar laugh as Adam joined us in line with his boys.
“I didn’t beg you, Peony,” Jinx said before leaning in until I felt his lips brush my ear. “But I can give it a try if you want.”
“Jinx-”
“Ah!”
“Ugh, Brixton, stop it,” I hissed at him.
“Hmmm, fine,” he said teasingly. “But only because like the way you say my name.”
What the hell is even my life right now?
Finally, we made it to the front counter. Adam got him and the boys skis. Jinx got Waylen and
himself a set. Just when he was about to pay, I butted in that I wanted a set too.
“You’re going to ski?” Jinx asked as I pulled my wallet out of the zipper pocket of my thick–a.ss
coat. “What the hell are you doing?” He bit out.
My head snapped up to see that he was talking to me.
“Yes, I’m skiing, and I want to pay. You brought me here, bought me lunch, your mom invited me to
dinner again tonight,” I said. “This is the least I can do.”
“Put your damn wallet back,” he grumbled before handing the sales person his card. “You’re lucky we’re all beginners.”
“Why’s that?” I asked with a laugh.
“Now we all get to fumble together,” he muttered as he grabbed all our sets.

“Will we though?” I asked. Jinx gave me a look, but didn’t elaborate.
Guess we’ll just have to see who fumbles on the slopes big man.
