Chapter 27
Chapter 27
Back in the city, the Dennis family is glued to the broadcast. Jake orchestrated this entire nightmare specifically so Jade could shine as the perfect, angelic heiress while grinding Tara into the dirt.
But the reality is a catastrophic failure. Tara is absolutely dominating the screen, while Jade’s manipulative, spoiled behavior is being broadcast to millions in high definition.
“How is this happening…” Jake mutters to himself, his brow furrowed in deep frustration. Where did he miscalculate? He suddenly realizes he drastically underestimated Tara. She is not the weak, cowardly girl he remembers. She is a force of nature, completely unbothered by the cameras and effortlessly turning every trap into a victory. Where did she acquire all these survival skills? It must have been during those mysterious years she was missing. A pampered socialite doesn’t just wake up knowing how to command a wood-burning stove.
The next morning, the director announces a massive difficulty spike: the guests must hike deep into the mountains to forage for wild medicinal herbs.
“The woods are dense and potentially dangerous,” the director warns sharply. “Stay alert.”
The five women begin the grueling ascent. The mountain trail is treacherous, choked with overgrown thorns and jagged rocks. Tara takes the absolute lead, navigating the brutal terrain with a sturdy walking stick, constantly calling out warnings about loose footing and hidden drops to the girls behind her.
Jade, predictably, is dead last. She is pale, drenched in sweat, and gasping for air, her constant whining echoing through the trees. “This trail is impossible… Is the crew trying to kill us?”
Truthfully, Jade is filled with blinding regret. What was she thinking agreeing to this? The reality shows she watched on TV featured luxury villas and ocean views. Why is she stuck in this godforsaken wilderness? It is pure torture.
Ana snaps her head back, furious. “Can you just shut up? If you can’t handle it, sit in the dirt and wait. Stop dragging the rest of us down.”
Jade bites her lip, tears welling up on cue. “I was just worried about everyone’s safety…”
The chat lights up:
“Here she goes again, classic manipulator!”
“Ana tells it exactly like it is! I’m so sick of Jade’s whining!”
“You guys are so toxic. Jade is just being honest.”
“Are we going to ignore how badass Tara looks leading the pack? She is an absolute boss!”
Suddenly, Tara stops dead in her tracks. She crouches down, carefully pushing aside a dense patch of ferns, her eyes locking onto a hidden prize. “Got one.”
The crew rushes over with the cameras. Nestled in the damp earth is a perfectly formed, highly valuable wild mushroom.
The director is stunned. “You found one already? That’s insane luck!”

Tara delicately extracts the mushroom and places it in her basket. “It’s not luck. It’s experience.”
Tina raises an impressed eyebrow. “You know herbal medicine too?”
“A little,” Tara replies coolly.
