The phone rings for an agonizingly long time before it connects. The second it does, Jake barks into the receiver. "Tara, you've already won this round! Why haven't you told James to drop the lawsuit? What exactly do you want?"
In his panic, he completely forgets that the woman on the line is no longer the submissive Tara of the past. A long, chilling silence follows before a dark chuckle echoes through the speaker. "Heh."
Before Jake can process the sound, she drawls, "Look at you, strutting around like you're the master of the universe."
The most infuriating part is that before he can spit out a single word of defense against her mockery, she hangs up on him.
Jake's chest tightens so violently he almost gives himself a heart attack. He immediately hits redial, only to find the number unreachable! "Goddamn it! She blocked this number too!"
Furious, desperate, and out of options, Jake humiliatingly borrows another subordinate's phone. He dials again. He calls five times in a row, all ignored. On the sixth try, right before it goes to voicemail, she finally picks up.
This time, he doesn't dare raise his voice or act arrogant. "Tara, do you have a moment? Let's meet and talk."
"I'll pass. The Dennis Group and my company are practically at war right now. It wouldn't look good if our meeting ended in a bloodbath," Tara's lazy, nonchalant voice replies. Her tone explicitly removes herself from any association with the Dennis family.
