The Scorned Heiress: No More Mercy novel Chapter 331

Jake listens to his idiot brother's rant, fighting the urge to crack Alec's skull open to see if it is stuffed with sawdust. It is as if Alec is under some kind of spell, worshipping Jade like a goddess. But seeing Alec's pathetic state reminds Jake that he used to be just as blind. The memory leaves a bitter taste in his mouth.

"Then make sure you protect her," Jake scoffs, cutting off his brother's self-righteous monologue. He doesn't hesitate to drag Evan into the crossfire. "You and Evan better do a great job guarding her. Especially you, Evan. You're her fiancé. If you don't perform well, wait until your mother finds out."

The label of 'mommy's boy' has been glued to Evan for years. As his former classmate, Jake knows exactly where to hit where it hurts. Since Jade played him for a fool for so long, Jake has no intention of letting anyone else enjoy a peaceful night.

"What does this have to do with me? I'm completely innocent here!" Evan snaps back defensively. "She's your sister. You guys are the ones who need to keep her in line!"

Keep her from running around and ruining people's lives, Evan thinks bitterly.

His mind flashes back to the cruise ship incident where his own mother set him up, forcing him to be tied to Jade. He used to think Jade was gentle, considerate, and attentive. In contrast, he had viewed Tara as stubborn and entirely lacking in romance. But ever since he and Tara broke off their engagement and drew a clear line in the sand, she has only grown more dazzling and magnetic. Sometimes, Evan can't help but wonder if Tara hid her true self on purpose, only revealing her brilliance after she was free from him. Regardless, his mother played him, and he has no way to retaliate. It is suffocating.

"I don't need your charity," Jade sobs, playing the victim. "I'm not a child. If I'm such a burden to all of you, I'll just go home!"

Accustomed to being coddled, she bursts into tears and runs off. She feels humiliated and refuses to spend another second embarrassing herself in front of Tara.
