Jake listens to his idiot brother's rant, fighting the urge to crack Alec's skull open to see if it is stuffed with sawdust. It is as if Alec is under some kind of spell, worshipping Jade like a goddess. But seeing Alec's pathetic state reminds Jake that he used to be just as blind. "Then make sure you protect her," Jake scoffs, cutting off his brother's self-righteous monologue. He doesn't hesitate to drag Evan into the crossfire. "You and Evan better do a great job guarding her. Especially you, Evan. You're her fiancé. If you don't perform well, wait until your mother finds out."

"I don't need your charity," Jade sobs, playing the victim. "I'm not a child. If I'm such a burden to all of you, I'll just go home!"
