The Scorned Heiress: No More Mercy novel Chapter 352

Sitting across from each other feels agonizingly awkward. Two men who supposedly severed ties shouldn't be splitting appetizers. Evan feels like every passing patron is shooting them weird, investigative looks. Even the waiter's smile seems a little too knowing.

"If you wanted to talk, we could have just grabbed a drink," Jake drawls. "Why force a dinner? Looking at your face is killing my appetite."

Evan lets out a harsh, bitter laugh. "Then starve. You can sit there and watch me eat."

"Why did you even drag me out here?" Jake snaps. "I could be at the office doing actual work, or at home taking a nap."

"Please. Like you do anything useful," Evan shoots back. "Going home to sleep is just you wasting your life."

Jake goes completely silent. He stares at Evan for a long, heavy moment before pushing his chair back and standing up. Wasting his prime years bickering with a mommy's boy is entirely beneath him.

Panic spikes in Evan's chest. He jumps up and grabs Jake's arm. "I was just joking! Don't be so sensitive."

He drags Jake back into his seat and immediately launches into a frantic venting session. "I regret breaking my engagement with Tara so much. I don't want to be tied to Jade. I tried fighting my mom on it, but it was useless. It's a nightmare." Stressed out of his mind, Evan aggressively chugs his sparkling water. He isn't the type to drown his sorrows in alcohol, preferring to cope with sparkling water and hot soup.
