The transformation is staggering. The submissive, eager-to-please girl is gone, replaced by a striking, thorny rose. And god help him, Jake is even more obsessed with her now.
"Are you out of your mind?" Lucinda fires back, her tone polite but laced with venom. "Do I need your permission to choose my friends? If you are done talking, please go back to your own table. You are ruining my mood."
Because of her impeccable upbringing, Lucinda's insults still carry a hint of refined elegance. Tara, however, has absolutely zero filter.
"Don't let him ruin your day, Lucinda," Tara says smoothly, not even looking at Jake. "Just tell the jerk to get out. If he refuses to leave, we'll call the cops and report him for harassment."
"You—!" Jake chokes on a string of curses, forcing himself to swallow his rage. "I didn't say you were a bad influence, Tara. I'm not telling her to stop seeing you." Since he genuinely wants to mend fences with his sister, he forces his voice to soften, practically begging for a truce.
Neither woman acknowledges him.
Evan steps up behind Jake and claps a hand on his shoulder. "Step aside," he whispers confidently. "Let a professional handle this."
She has zero mercy for people she despises. A young waiter rushes over, shooting Evan an incredibly awkward, apologetic look.
Evan's confident, romantic facade instantly shatters. A furious, humiliated flush creeps up his neck. He has spent his entire life being treated like a distinguished gentleman; he has never been kicked out of a restaurant like a common creep!
Behind him, Jake violently covers his mouth to muffle a bark of laughter. The dark cloud over his head vanishes entirely. True brothers really do suffer together. Watching Evan get utterly destroyed in under sixty seconds is the most satisfying thing he has seen all day. He can't believe the idiot actually thought he could tame a wildcard like Tara.
