Nikolai stares at Jake, thoroughly unsettled by the shift in his older brother's demeanor, though he cannot quite pinpoint what is wrong. He wants to offer a warning but finds himself at a loss for words.
"Since you're spending so much time with her at the company, you should mentor her yourself," Jake replies smoothly, effortlessly passing the burden. He has zero intention of warning his brothers about Jade's true colors. They can suffer the exact same betrayal he did. With Nikolai actively involved in the Dennis Group and Alec anchored in their media division, leaving Jade in Nikolai's hands guarantees a spectacular disaster.
"I'm completely swamped. I don't have the time to babysit," Jake adds, especially not for a lost cause like Jade.
"Alright, fine," Nikolai says, puffing out his chest a little. "Things have settled down on my end anyway. Thanks to Jade stepping up, a lot of our partners have backed off, so I don't have to deal with as many legal fires. She's so capable and sweet, it won't even feel like work to show her the ropes."
Nikolai is entirely convinced that Jade is a lucky charm. He credits her presence for his lighter workload and fully believes he owes her his guidance in return.
"Then it's settled," Jake says. He claps Nikolai on the shoulder, a dark, knowing glint in his eyes. "Good luck. You're going to need it."
Jake turns on his heel and walks away, leaving Nikolai staring after him. A bizarre chill runs down Nikolai's spine. It was just a pat on the shoulder, yet it felt like a cursed omen.
