Nathaniel's blunt correction leaves Nikolai visibly embarrassed. He has subconsciously conditioned himself to view Jade as the older, more sensible sister simply because she acts so sweet and accommodating. In his mind, Tara is the aggressive one who constantly picks on Jade, completely flipping their actual dynamic.
"It was just a figure of speech," Nikolai mutters, too stubborn to admit he is wrong. "My point is, if they spend more time studying together, their relationship will naturally improve."
Jade is thrilled by Nikolai's defense. She loves it when he compares them, especially since he always ensures she comes out on top. Lately, she finds Nikolai far more reliable than Jake, who has become terrifyingly unpredictable. The thought of Jake's sudden hostility makes her chest tight with anxiety. She knows she needs to find a way to repair her relationship with him soon, as Jake holds too much power in the family for her to lose his favor.
"Are you done?" Tara interrupts, completely unimpressed by their little display of sibling solidarity. "If you're finished, let's get on with the actual presentation."
"Yes, please," one of the executives chimes in. "I have a meeting to catch."
