"You're the best, Nikolai! I absolutely love these little things. They're way more precious than any jewelry," Jade coos, clinging to his arm. Inwardly, she is seething at how cheap he is. She plays the perfect, sweet sister, and all she gets is a box of plastic toys. But to maintain her flawless image, she swallows her bitter disappointment.
Seeing her radiant smile, Nikolai chuckles and affectionately ruffles her hair. "I'm glad you like them. I'll bring you a gift every time I go on a trip from now on."
Jade's eyes light up, and she hugs his arm even tighter. "Yay! I knew you loved me the most." Next time, she plots silently, she'll have to drop hints for something actually expensive.
Held so tightly against her, Nikolai suddenly remembers their mother's strict warning about maintaining physical boundaries with Jade. That, combined with the lingering guilt of constantly buying things for Jade while entirely neglecting his biological sister, makes him feel a sharp pang of shame. He gently but firmly pulls away. "Jade, have you forgotten the recent scandals? We need to keep a proper distance to avoid any misunderstandings. Even if our consciences are clear, people with hidden agendas will twist this if they see it."
Pushed away, Jade freezes in shock before her annoyance spikes. Her brothers never acted like this before. It is all because of some stupid rumors spread by nobodies. Why does he care so much? Despite her simmering rage, she nods meekly. "Okay, I understand."
She smoothly pivots the conversation. "Nikolai, there's an auction tomorrow and I really want to go. Can you come with me?"
