At this point, Deanna refuses to believe a single word Charles says. As far as she is concerned, her husband is just making excuses, refusing to admit his betrayal even when cornered.

"Mom, Dad, Jake, Nikolai, what's going on?" A sweet, deliberately soft voice breaks the suffocating tension in the room. Even without looking, everyone knows it's Jade.

In the past, Deanna found that voice endearing and thought of Jade as the perfect, obedient daughter. But now, seeing her only triggers a sickening wave of revulsion as she pictures her husband tangled in the sheets with his mistress. "Jade, go back to your room. We can talk later," Nikolai urges quickly, sensing that his mother might actually strangle the girl if she stays a second longer. He can hardly blame Deanna; anyone would lose their mind after discovering their spouse's infidelity and a hidden love child.

"Okay," Jade whispers. She bites her lower lip and jogs out of the room, playing the part of a deeply wounded, misunderstood victim.
