Jovani smiles, clearly pleased by her daughter's sharp intuition. She sets her wine glass down and nods approvingly. "Exactly."
"Nikolai was becoming entirely too much of a nuisance," Jovani says casually, as if discussing what to have for dinner rather than an assassination attempt. "He was the first one I wanted gone, and frankly, the easiest target. So, he became my first test subject."
Jade frowns, crossing her arms. "If you wanted someone gone, why not Jake? Why go after Nikolai first? He's still slightly useful to me."
Though she doesn't care if they all die eventually, Jade despises Jake more than anyone. Jake was the first to see through her innocent act and has constantly stood in her way. She wants him erased.
"Do you think eliminating a primary heir of the Dennis family is like squashing a bug?" Jovani sighs, rolling her eyes at her daughter's impatience. "Everything requires precise calculation."
If it were that easy, she would have slaughtered Tara the second she returned to the city.
"I chose Nikolai because the boy has a very predictable habit—he drinks a glass of warm milk every single night before bed," Jovani explains, a predatory gleam in her eyes. "More importantly, he always has the kitchen staff prepare it. It was incredibly easy to intercept. He doesn't have Jake's paranoid caution, and he doesn't vanish into unpredictable party scenes like Alec."
Jovani leans forward, her expression darkening. "Besides, his recent aggressive restructuring in the Dennis Group's legal department was becoming a major threat. I'm not sure if he caught on, but several of the lawyers he recently fired were my inside men. Taking him out now solves my problem."
