Jade had been certain Tara wouldn't show her face today. Hadn't Tara publicly severed all ties with the Dennis family? Hadn't she sworn she'd never step foot near them again? Why the hell is she here? Did she show up just to play the dutiful daughter so she could sink her claws into Charles's estate?
The hypocrisy makes Jade want to scream.
"Don't ever address me like we're family," Tara says, her tone lethal. "I don't have a sister, and just looking at you turns my stomach."
"Excuse me?" Jade scoffs, dropping the innocent act for a split second. Who does this bitch think she is? Some untouchable goddess?
Operating on pure instinct, Jade turns her teary, victimized gaze toward the three brothers, expecting them to instinctively shield her. But times have changed. The brothers look at her with such raw, unfiltered disgust that if they weren't standing beside their father's casket, they would have physically thrown her out themselves.
"Don't call us your brothers either," Alec snaps. "It makes my skin crawl."
"Do us all a favor and disappear," Nikolai adds coldly. "Tara told you to get out. Are you deaf?"
Aunt Kellen watches the three brothers stand in unified defense of Tara, and tears prick her eyes. It's the first time they've truly acted like a family. If only Charles were alive to see it.
"You heard them! Get the hell out of here!" Kellen demands, stepping forward.
Jovani flushes with humiliation. How dare they humiliate her and her daughter like this in front of Capital City's elite? She immediately looks toward Gregory, her eyes swimming with practiced, desperate tears.
Gregory takes the bait. "I understand this is a sensitive situation. But regardless of the complications, Jovani was with Charles for years. She has a right to be here out of sheer human decency. There's no need to treat them like this."
Gregory is known as the "nice guy" of their social circle—affable, well-connected, and rarely challenged. He fully expects the Dennis family to back down and give him face.
