"How—how can you say that about me? That's not what I meant at all!" Jade stammers, her voice cracking.
For years, she had been sheltered, adored, and fiercely protected by the Dennis brothers and her mother. Now, faced with their united, icy hostility and relentless sarcasm, she is completely unequipped to fight back.
"Who cares what you mean? Get out of our sight. You're ruining the view," a deep voice demands.
Jake strides into the clearing. Originally, he and Nikolai had been buried under a mountain of corporate legal work and hadn't planned to attend the retreat. They had been working themselves to the bone, desperate to help Tara manage the Dennis Group, wanting to ease her burden and protect the empire their grandfather built. But the guilt of not showing up gnawed at them. Bianca had organized this retreat, and she is Tara's best friend; skipping it might look like they didn't care. As soon as the paperwork was signed, the two brothers had rushed over, catching the tail end of the event just to show their support.
Ignoring Jade completely, Jake makes a beeline for Tara. "Tara, have you eaten enough? You look so thin. Please, have some more."
"Yeah, if there's anything else you're craving, just tell me. If they don't have it here, I'll drive into town and buy it for you," Nikolai adds eagerly.
"Me too!" Alec practically shoves his way forward. "Food, drinks, whatever you want. If they don't deliver, I'll go get it myself. I don't care how far it is."
The three brothers hover over her, practically competing to prove their devotion. They know Tara might ignore them or snap at them, and they are completely prepared to swallow the rejection.
"President Dennis is so lucky. Three gorgeous brothers waiting on her hand and foot. I wish my brother was like that," a junior employee whispers nearby.
"Forget brothers, my own parents don't even pamper me that much."
