Danny summons every ounce of his patience, coaxing her softly. "Come on, be good. You'll feel so much better after you drink this, okay?"

He scoops up a spoonful, blows on it gently, and presses it to her lips.

Tara instinctively opens her mouth and swallows. The sharp bite of the ginger makes her grimace, waking her up slightly. "It's too spicy..." she mumbles, scrunching her nose.

"Just finish the bowl, and you're done," Danny says with a soft laugh. He feeds her spoonful by spoonful, his gaze so tender it could melt ice.

Once the bowl is empty, a comfortable heat radiates through Tara's chest, chasing away the lingering chill.

Danny sets the empty mug aside and presses a thermometer to her ear. "Ninety-eight point eight. Thank God, no fever."

He breathes a heavy sigh of relief and tucks the blankets snugly around her shoulders. "Go back to sleep. You'll be good as new by morning."

Tara reaches out from beneath the covers, her fingers wrapping loosely around his wrist. "Stay with me."

Danny doesn't hesitate for a second. "Let me wash up. I'll be right back."

He showers in record time, throwing on a fresh pair of sweatpants before sliding into the bed next to her, terrified she might change her mind.

And she almost does.

She pushes lightly against his chest. "Wait. What if you catch it? Maybe you should sleep in the guest room tonight."

"Not a chance. My immune system is bulletproof. I'm not going anywhere."

Ignoring her weak protests, he pulls her firmly against his chest. Tara doesn't fight it. Craving the warmth, she curls into him, resting her cheek against the steady rhythm of his heartbeat, and falls into a deep sleep.

Danny holds her securely, feeling the soft, even cadence of her breathing. A deeply satisfied smile touches his lips.

He waits until he is absolutely certain she is completely asleep before carefully untangling himself from her grip.

As soon as he steps out of the bedroom and pulls the door shut, the tender warmth completely vanishes from his face. His expression turns deadly.
