The more she thinks about it, the angrier she gets. A suffocating wave of rage presses against her chest, making her dizzy. She originally planned to track Tara's schedule and figure out a foolproof way to ruin her, but she cannot wait another second.
Extreme, unhinged madness floods Jade's eyes, her sheer malice impossible to hide. She grabs her cracked phone and dials a number she hasn't used in a long time.
The line connects, and a gravelly voice speaks up. "It has been a while since you called."
"I have no other choice," Jade snaps. "Do you still have that powder? I need some."
The voice falls silent for a moment. "Does your mother know you're asking for this?"
"I don't care if she knows or not! I need it now. Please."
After a long pause, the voice mutters a single word. "Fine."
Jade finally breathes a sigh of relief. Even though this contact belongs to her mother's underground network, Jade has dealt with them enough to get what she wants. *Just you wait, Tara,* she thinks, her eyes crawling with desperate, suicidal malice. *One of us is going to die!*
Evan stares at his phone in disbelief. Did his cold-hearted friend completely miss the absolute devastation in his voice? Clearly, brotherhood means nothing the second a sister is involved. Any hope of fixing things with Tara is officially dead. To make matters worse, that bastard Jake actually compared him to his rival! Tears of pure frustration roll down Evan's cheeks.
Sunday arrives.
A few days prior, Deanna finally mustered the courage to call Tara and discuss the engagement. Tara agreed to meet in person, giving her a specific time. Deanna has been eagerly looking forward to this moment. Dressed elegantly and looking more energized than she has in weeks, she arrives at the meeting spot with a bright smile. Between the double blow of her late husband's sudden death and discovering the truth about Jovani and Jade, this is the first time she genuinely feels a spark of joy.
She purposely books a private room in an elegant tea house, arriving half an hour early. Her fingers unconsciously trace the rim of her warm cup as she rehearses what to say. She wants to express a mother's genuine joy and blessings, but she is terrified that bringing up their past rift will ruin Tara's mood. Her fragile anticipation leaves her feeling completely overwhelmed.
