Danny hates seeing her anxious. Since he can't magically produce the answer, all he can do is offer his unwavering comfort.
"Okay. Let's sleep," Tara murmurs into his chest.
But the moment she closes her eyes, her mind goes into overdrive. A sudden, lightning-fast realization pierces through the fog of her thoughts. It isn't the first time she has had a fleeting instinct about this, but tonight, she violently latches onto it.
Everything clicks into place.
Her father was incredibly paranoid about data security. He never relied on standard storage. Every vital message or email he drafted was automatically backed up to a highly encrypted, invisible cloud drive that only he knew existed. She vaguely remembers him mentioning it to her when she was a little girl. He trusted her more than anyone else in the world, sharing secrets he kept from everyone else.
Her eyes snap open. She shoots up in bed, ignoring the darkness, her voice vibrating with adrenaline. "Danny! I know what it is! The hacker wiped the local drive, but they missed the backdoor!"
Danny, who was teetering on the edge of sleep, is instantly wide awake. He snaps the bedside lamp on. His voice is gravelly with sleep but razor-sharp. "What did you remember? Take your time, walk me through it."
