Is this woman out of her mind? There is simply no logical reason for her to be completely unfazed.
The driver shoots another glance at her through the rearview mirror. Tara is leaning casually against the door, watching the streetlights blur past the window. Her fingers tap a steady rhythm against her knee, looking more like she is enjoying a scenic drive than enduring a kidnapping.
The unsettling feeling in his gut grows until he can't take the silence anymore. "Hey. Aren't you scared?" he barks, his voice rough.
Tara turns to him, her expression deadpan, her tone as casual as if discussing the weather. "Does being scared help? Are you going to let me go if I cry?"
The driver chokes on his words. He has dealt with screaming, cursing, and desperate negotiations, but no one has ever thrown logic back in his face. Frowning, he decides the woman is definitely unhinged and refuses to waste another breath on her. He scoffs and refocuses on the road. He is being paid a fortune simply to deliver her; asking questions in this line of work is a quick way to wind up dead.
Seeing him shut down, Tara returns her gaze to the window. She looks completely at ease, but her mind is running at a million miles an hour. The roads grow darker and emptier, the streetlights sparse. Concrete buildings give way to abandoned factories and sprawling fields. She memorizes every landmark and turn, keeping a close eye on the driver's movements to find her window of escape.
Eventually, the car screeches to a halt in the middle of nowhere. Before she can move, the door is yanked open from the outside, and a team of heavily trained men in black swarms the car. They move with lethal efficiency, pinning her down and binding her wrists with thick rope before dragging her into an abandoned warehouse.
