The Second Chance Of The Rejected Moon

Last Chapter of Book 1

SP

Jand freezes with his pants in his hands and looks at me as if I had just announced that I plan to swim across the ocean.

“Do you at least know how to drive?”

I shrug.

“I learn fast.”

The look he gives me makes it quite clear that my answer does not inspire much confidence.

“Celine…”

“I’m not going to crash it.”

“I hope not.”

He finishes getting dressed, puts on his boots, and then zips up his jacket while I remain sitting with Oana in my arms. When he is done, he takes the keys from a small table beside the bed and puts them in his pocket:

“If you leave this castle, I’m going with you. I’m here because of you, not because I like being your employee. What about Thomas?”

The question makes me stand immediately. I cross the small room toward him and hug him tightly. Jared takes barely a second to react before wrapping his arms around me. I feel his chin resting on top of my head, and for a few seconds, I allow myself to rest against him. I do not need to explain anything. I do not need to pretend that I am okay.

“Thank you, Jared. You are a good friend.”

“Anything for you, sweetheart,” he replies as he kisses the top of my head. “Are things really that bad with Bastian that you want to leave everything behind?”

I nod against his chest and finally pull away. Sadness settles over my face again as I look at him.

“I’m not leaving him. I just need time for things between us to calm down. Besides, I don’t know where Johan is, and I’m worried.”

Jared watches me for a few seconds, as if he wants to ask me something else, but he finally nods. His expression softens, and he begins putting a few things into a travel bag he finds beside the bed.

“Okay. He hasn’t been the best mate these past few days. I asked you if you already talked to Thomas.”

I shake my head and carefully lay Oana on the bed. The little girl barely moves but does not wake up.

“No. He has a life in this kingdom now. I don’t want to force him to leave everything behind for me.”

Jared remains still for a moment. He seems about to say something, but he finally stays silent. Instead of insisting, he takes the bag and opens it on the bed.

“I’ll stay with the baby. Take everything you can carry. In less than an hour, everyone will wake up and the shifts will change. Hurry.”

He is right.

I look toward the door.

I cannot stay here arguing until someone discovers that I left. Besides, my swords are still in the bedroom.

I go back to get them.

leave Jared’s room and make my way through the corridors, trying not to make any noise. The castle is still immersed in darkness, and every one of my footsteps seems too loud against the stone. Every now and then, I look toward both ends of the hallway, expecting to run into one of the guards, but no one appears. Part of me thanks the goddess for that./

When I finally reach my bedroom, I carefully open the door and step inside. Everything remains exactly as I left it. The fireplace has almost completely burned out, and only a few logs remain glowing among the embers. My eyes move across the room until they stop on the dresser.

The swords.

I approach them first and carefully pick them up. Erebus and Helel rest side by side, apparently calm after everything that happened tonight. I watch them for a few seconds before placing them across my back.

Then I enter the dressing room.

I take a training bag and begin putting in everything I need for the trip. Clothes for Oana, diapers, an extra blanket, a coat shoes, and a few clothes for myself. Nothing else.

I do not take jewelry.

I do not take things I never asked for.

I do not take anything that truly belongs to this life I am leaving behind.

I open one of the compartments and find the cards Bastian gave me. I look at them for a few seconds before putting them back in their place. I do not have a single penny in cash because I never needed it. I always used the cards he gave me, and wherever I am going, they probably will not be of any use to me.

I close the bag.

I return to the dresser and take a sheet of paper. I sit in front of the piece of furniture, find a pen, and begin to write.

Bastian:

1 will return exactly one month from now. I told you days ago that I cannot live without you and Johan, but you decided that getting him out of my life was a good idea. You did not consider my pain, you did not think about the damage you were causing me, and then you treated me as if I were some nobody.

This month is for you to think about whether you really love me the way you say you do. If you can understand that our lives will no longer be the same, that now it is you, me, and Johan, I will stay in this castle. I will wear the crown you want me to wear, and we will live a long life together. But if you cannot accept it, then we will go our separate ways.

Do not look for me. You will not be able to find me. Not here, not in the human world, not even in the kingdom of my new friends in Avalon.

One month.

I love you, Bastian Thorn, but I have had enough of all of this.

Celine.

I set the pen down on the dresser and read the note one last time. The words are firm, but my chest tightens when I imagine the moment Bastian finds it. Even so, I do not change anything.

I fold the sheet slightly and leave it on the dresser, right where I know it will be the first thing he sees.

Then I fasten the straps of my swords and adjust the buckles until they feel secure against my body. The weight of both

weapons on my back should feel strange after spending so many months without training with them, but for some reason. I feel an unexpected sense of calm having them with me again.

I leave the room and close the door behind me.

Fortunately, there is no one around.
