Chapter 113
Mia felt the room spin inside her heart, for a second.
Everything felt like it paused.
Stefan didn’t speak.
She turned to look at him slowly, searching his face for… something. Some sign that this was a misunderstanding. A prank. Anything.
But all she saw was his clenched jaw and dark eyes, glaring at the woman across the table.
That silence told her more than she wanted to know.
Her spine straightened, but she didn’t flinch. Didn’t let her smile slip, either.
Instead, she looked at the lady….. Stefan had called Sammy, slowly….. her expression unreadable, her smile as bright and wide as ever.
“Why would I have a problem, Miss Sammy?” she said coolly. “You’re his past. I’m his future. You were his first love. But I’m the one he’ll love till his last breath.”
She paused for just a second, then added with a softer smile “Now, if we’re done with the personal history lesson, can we focus on what we’re all here for?”
Elena couldn’t help the wide smile that appeared on her face. She has never been more proud of Mia. Mia never disappoint.
Sammy’s smile stayed, but something dark flickered in her eyes. She wasn’t expecting that. She wanted a crack…. a flinch, a twitch, something to show that Mia was threatened.
But Mia gave her nothing.
Nothing but grace and calm…. the kind that cuts deeper than any insult.
Sammy turned slightly in her chair, resting one elbow on the armrest, still smiling, still poised. But beneath it, her knuckles were turning white from how tight she was holding her pen.
She didn’t say another word, for now.
Stefan hadn’t moved much since that bomb dropped. His eyes were still locked on Mia, as if silently checking if she was okay. He looked… tense. Uncomfortable. But he hadn’t said anything else, hadn’t looked at Sammy again either.
He didn’t need to.
Mia had spoken loud enough for the both of them. She was his future. The one he wanted to spend forever with. The rest of the meeting moved on, though the energy in the room had shifted. Presentations resumed, contracts discussed, ideas tossed back and forth. But every time Sammy spoke, her eyes would wander…… just slightly…. to Stefan.
And every time, he kept his gaze down or on Mia.
It was subtle, but Mia noticed.
Everyone in the room could feel it – that quiet, silent war rewing under polite smiles and exchanged words.

But Mia?
Mia didn’t have time to play game with Sammy. She wasn’t worth it.
Because she knew something Sammy knew but wouldn’t admit.
She was the one Stefan went home with. The one he kissed goodnight. The one he built an empire beside.
So, if Sammy thinks she can rattle her with history – then she clearly doesn’t know who Mia Meyer Sterling really is.
Not yet.
The meeting wrapped up without another word from Sammy. But just as she reached the door, she turned, flashing a smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes.
“Goodbye, Stefan,” she said softly.
Mia barely looked up, but she didn’t miss it…. the way Sammy said his name like it was hers to still use. She kept her gaze on the file in front of her, discussing a minor point with Elena, but her brow lifted just slightly.
Out of the corner of her eye, she glanced at Stefan.
Nothing.
He didn’t look up. Didn’t say a word. Just continued going over details with Mose like he didn’t hear his name.
That was all she needed to see.
Her lips curled slightly into a small, private smirk. Her husband wouldn’t disappoint her.
A few minutes later, Elena closed her file and stood, giving Mia’s shoulder a quick pat. “I’ll leave you two. I’ve got a call with one of the vendors.”
Mose followed behind her, already answering something on his phone.
That left Mia and Stefan alone. The silence between them was thick and loaded.
Mia slowly began packing up her things, not saying a word as she stood, adjusting the sleeve of her blazer and tucking her pen into the side of her notepad.
“Mia.” His voice was quiet and careful.
She paused. Her fingers froze on the folder, but she didn’t look at him.
Then, after a beat, she turned to face him…. calm, composed, and smiling.
“Not here, Stefan.” Her voice was soft, but firm.
“Today’s our first day. We don’t need to do this here.”
She gave a small shrug, lifting her bag over her shoulder. “We’ll be home soon enough. We’ll talk then, if there’s something to talk about. Right now… this……”she gestured to the office around them “this….. is what matters.”
Stefan’s eyes locked on hers, filled with so much frustration and guilt he didn’t know where to put it.
“But you’re what’s important to me.” The words tumbled out from his lips, like they were the most simplest things to say.
Mia’s chest fluttered. Her tummy made a flip. She felt it…. that little twist in her heart when he said things like that. And she believed him. She did.

But still.
She just smiled gently and nodded, turning toward the door!
Her silence was her answer. And she knew he understood.
