Stefan had wanted to
go
alone.

“It’s late,” he said, already reaching for his hoodie. “You don’t have to…..’
“1
“I have to,” Mia cut in, already slipping into sneakers. “It’s our building, Stefan. I’m coming.” He didn’t argue again. He just nodded once and they both headed out.
The city was quiet…. too quiet for what had just happened. The streets were still asleep, but here they were trying to save the one thing that mattered to them.
By the time they reached the construction site, fire trucks were already there. A few workers that had to spend the night, stood around.
Mose met them near the gate, a flashlight in hand, a thin layer of sweat on his brow.
“We were lucky” he said before they could even speak. “The fire didn’t spread.”
Stefan’s brows furrowed. “What do you mean? I thought…..
Mose gave a tired smile. “I thought so too, but it was stopped on time before it spread. And remember the fire- resistant system we had installed? That flame-blocker wallboard and the heat-sensor dampers? It worked.”
Mia blinked, then her chest rose with relief. “You mean…?”
“It caught before it could do real damage. It barely reached the corridor. We isolated and shut it down.”
Stefan looked at the still-smoldering corner. A little burnt, but not as bad as he expected.
All because of something they’d insisted on early during planning.
The fire-resistant insulation.
It had felt like an expensive precaution back then…. but now, it had saved everything.
“I told you that stuff would come in handy,” Mia said under her breath.
Stefan smirked and slid his hand into hers. “Best decision we made.”
They did a quick sweep of the building with Mose and the safety officer, confirming that nothing structural had been compromised.
The cameras had picked up movement, but the culprit had worn a mask. Still, Mose already had someone tracing the footage.
“We’re keeping this between us,” Stefan said after a long pause.
“Agreed,” Mia said. “We’re not giving whoever did this the satisfaction.”
“It was just a scare tactic,” Mose added. “They didn’t expect us to be ready.”
“Well,” Stefan said dryly, “they were wrong.”
By dawn, everything had changed.
The fire was nothing more than a footnote in a night full of adrenaline. The team had pulled together, covered the minor damage, and by 7 a.m. Elena was already on-site heling reset the plans.

The launch was still on track. Billboards were already rolling out.
Mose and the media team pushed a wave of ads and press updates across the city…… MSS was everywhere.
MSS World
“The Future is Now.”
People barely had time to blink before the name hit every major digital screen and ad space across Manhattan.
The logo launch included footage of their all-in-one construction solutions:
Building design
Construction
Road works
Importation of high-quality materials
Interior and exterior design
On-site architectural planning
Smart project management from start to finish
One company. One team. Every step.
……
By 9 a.m.,
their office was alive with movement.
Interviews were scheduled. New staff were arriving.
Mia stood in front of one of the glass panels and looked out at the street below…. cars passing, people pointing at their billboard.
“Whoever tried to scare us last night,” Mia said as she noticed Stefan by the window, “just gave us the best kind of motivation.”
Stefan smiled, but it didn’t quite reach her eyes. “They really thought fire would stop us?”
Mia turned to face him fully. “We built this together. Fireproof…. literally and otherwise.”
She leaned into him slightly. “Let’s see what they throw next.”
He pressed a kiss to her forehead. “They’ll run out of tricks”
The office buzzed with energy, but Stefan and Mia knew they had to leave for a few hours…. clean up, and come back stronger, they’ve been awake since Mose’s call. There was still one more important meeting today. One that could define the next level of their company.
By 11 a.m., they quietly slipped out the back door and heade home.
Neither said much during the drive.
Mia pulled off her snickers the moment they walked in, letting them drop with a soft thud by the doorway. She stretched her arms above her head, exhaling deeply.
Stefan watched her from behind, already loosening the buttons on his shirt.
“You look tired,” he said.

“I am,” she replied, turning to face him, “but we still have a major meeting this afternoon. We can’t afford to slack.”
He nodded like he agreed…… but then crossed the space between them with a mischievous smile pulling at his lips. “Just a few minutes. We’ve earned it.”
She narrowed her eyes suspiciously. “What are you up to?”
Instead of answering, Stefan leaned down and pressed a slow, teasing kiss to her lips. His hand rested lightly on her lower back, drawing her closer.
Mia smiled against his mouth but pulled away just enough to speak. “Stefan…”
He kissed the corner of her mouth this time, then her jaw. “Hmm?”
“We have to get ready,” she said, trying to sound serious but failing as his lips found that spot just below her ear.
He pulled back slightly, just enough to meet her gaze. “Don’t I get a prize?”
“A prize?” she asked, laughing softly.
“For everything I did last night and today,” he said, his voice low, playful. “Putting out a fire. Literally. Saving our launch. Standing on stage and looking ridiculously good beside my wife.”
Mia rolled her eyes with a smile. “You want a prize for being ridiculously good-looking?” 1
“Among other things,” he murmured, leaning in again.
She playfully placed a hand on his chest to stop him, her eyes twinkling. “I’ll give you a prize when we get back from the office. I promise.”
Stefan raised a brow. “You better not forget. I’ll be waiting.
She gave him a small kiss, quick and soft. “I don’t forget promises, Sterling.”
He let out a soft chuckle and finally stepped back. “Alright. Go freshen up, boss lady. Let’s go sign a deal.”
As Mia headed toward the stairs, she tossed a grin over her shoulder. “And maybe after that… I’ll let you cash in all your prizes.”
Stefan watched her disappear up the stairs, shaking his head with a grin.
Yeah. He was definitely the lucky one.
In the conference room, Mia stood at the head of the long glass table, flipping through the file she’d already read twice that morning. Elena sat beside her, sorting documents, while Mose stood near the screen, preparing the presentation slides.
Then the door opened.
One by one, the visiting team walked in….. well-dressed, confident, clearly from a top firm. Mia smiled politely, nodding as a few introduced themselves.
Until the last person entered. A woman.
Tall, striking, dressed in a clean-cut cream suit that hugged her frame like it was tailored with obsession. Her dark red lipstick sat perfectly against her warm brown skin and her heels clicked with unapologetic grace.
But that wasn’t what made Mia pause. It was Stefan.
