130 THE DOCTORS ARE WORKING ON HIM
Chapter 130
Mia and Stefan were sitting in the waiting room trying to process everything that had happened when they heard commotion coming from the emergency entrance. Voices were shouting medical terms and feet were running across the floor.
“What’s going on out there?” Mia asked, standing up to look through the window.
That’s when she saw the paramedics rushing a stretcher through the doors. Even from where she stood, she could see the blood and the way the person’s body was lying. But it wasn’t until she saw the familiar face that her world completely fell apart.
“No,” she whispered, her hand covering her mouth. “No, no, no.”
She ran toward the emergency room doors, but a nurse stopped her.
“Ma’am, you can’t go in there. The doctors are working on him.”
“That’s Mose!” Mia screamed, trying to push past the nurse. “That’s my friend! What happened to him?”
“He was hit by a car on the street” a nurse explained.
Stefan appeared beside her and gently pulled her back. “Mia, let them do their job.”
“This isn’t what I meant,” Mia sobbed, her whole body shaking. “This isn’t what I wanted to happen. Please, somebody do something. Please save him.”
The tears were pouring down her face so fast she could barely see. She kept trying to get closer to where they had taken Mose, but Stefan held her back.
“This is all my fault,” she cried into Stefan’s chest. “This is all my fault. I told him to go away. I told him never to show his face again.”
“Mia, this is not your fault,” Stefan said firmly, though his own voice was shaking. “You didn’t know this would happen.”
“If anything happens to him, I will never forgive myself,” Mia said through her tears. “Never. I swear I won’t be able to live with myself.”
Stefan held her tighter as she cried uncontrollably. He had never seen her this broken before. Her whole body was trembling and she could barely stand up on her own.
“He was walking away because of what I said to him,” Mia whispered. “He was walking on that street because I told him to leave. This is my fault, Stefan. This is all my fault.”
Stefan didn’t know what to say. Part of him knew she was right. If they hadn’t sent Mose away, he would still be safe. But he also knew that Mia was only trying to protect Elena.
She had acted out of love and fear, not hatred.
“We’re going to pray that he’s okay,” Stefan said quietly. “That’s all we can do right now.”

But as they waited, at the far end of the hallway, a man dressed in all black with a black cap pulled low over his face. The man was talking quietly to one of the doctors and money changed hands between them.
Three hours passed. Three of the longest hours of their lives. Mia had stopped crying but she sat staring at the emergency room doors like she could will the doctors to come out with good news.
Finally, a doctor appeared. His face was grim and tired. Stefan felt his heart sink before the man even spoke.
“Are you here for the car accident victim?” the doctor asked.
“Yes,” Stefan answered when Mia couldn’t speak. “How is he?”
The doctor looked down at his clipboard and then back at them. “I’m very sorry. We did everything we could, but his injuries were too severe. He didn’t make it.”
“No,” Mia whispered, standing up slowly. “No, you’re lying.”
“Ma’am, I understand this is difficult….”
“You’re lying!” Mia screamed, grabbing the doctor’s coat. “Tell me you’re lying! Tell me this is some kind of mistake!”
“Ma’am, please……’
“I
“He can’t be dead! He can’t be! I just saw him an hour ago!”
Stefan gently pulled Mia away from the doctor, but she fought against him.
“I’m very sorry for your loss,” the doctor said quietly before walking away.
“Bring him back!” Mia screamed after the doctor. “Bring him back right now!”
A few minutes later, they wheeled out a stretcher covered with a white sheet. Mia broke away from Stefan and ran to it. Before anyone could stop her, she pulled back the cloth covering Mose’s face.
There he was. Peaceful looking, like he was just sleeping. But his skin was pale and there was dried blood in his hair. His face was bruised and swollen from the accident.
Mia fell to her knees beside the stretcher, her hands covering her face as she sobbed so hard her whole body
shook.
“No, no, no,” she kept saying over and over. “This can’t be happening. This can’t be real.”
Stefan stood behind her with a sad and painful look. His best friend, his brother, was looking so pale. The man who had been by his side through everything was lying there still. He’d imagined how much pain, he’d have gone through.
This isn’t how it was supposed to go. This isn’t what we planned.
The man in black walked away quickly as he saw he had accomplished what he was sent to do, he disappeared through a side exit.
The hospital staff gently moved them away so they could take Mose’s body to the morgue. Mia had to be practically carried away because she didn’t want to leave him.
