Chapter 129
Mia was sitting in the living room trying to calm down after everything that had happened when her phone rang. The number on the screen made her heart skip a beat. It was the hospital.
“Hello?” she answered quickly.
“Is this Mia Sterling?” the voice on the other end sounded urgent and worried.
“Yes, this is her. What’s wrong?”
“We need you to come to the hospital immediately. Your friend Elena has been rushed into emergency surgery. Someone came into her room pretending to be a doctor and injected her with something. We’re doing everything we can but you need to get here now.”
The phone slipped from Mia’s hand and clattered to the floor. She felt like the whole world had stopped spinning. Elena was supposed to be safe. She had told her not to let anyone give her anything except the real doctor.
“Stefan!” she screamed as she ran toward the door. “Stefan, we have to go now!”
Stefan appeared from upstairs taking the steps two at a time when he heard the panic in her voice.
“What happened? What’s wrong?”
“Someone tried to kill Elena. They injected her with poison. We have to go to the hospital right now.” Tears were already streaming down her face.
Stefan grabbed his keys and they both ran outside to the car. He drove faster than he had ever driven before, running red lights and weaving through traffic. Mia sat in the passenger seat praying over and over again that Elena would be okay.
When they got to the hospital, Mia jumped out of the car before Stefan had even parked properly. She ran through the front doors and up to the reception desk.
“Elena Santos. Where is she? I got a call that she was in surgery.

The nurse looked at her computer. “She’s in operating room three. The doctors are working on her now. You’ll need to wait in the family waiting area on the second floor.”
Mia ran to the elevator with Stefan right behind her. When they got to the waiting area, she couldn’t sit still. She paced back and forth while Stefan tried to get more information from the nurses.
“What exactly did they inject her with?” Stefan asked one of the nurses.
“We’re not sure yet. It was some kind of toxin that started shutting down her organs. The doctors are trying to flush it out of her system but it’s going to take time.”
Three hours felt like three years. Mia had worn a path in the floor from all her pacing. Stefan tried to get her to sit down and eat something but she refused. How could she eat when Elena might be dying?
Finally, a doctor in green scrubs came through the double doors. His mask was pulled down and he looked tired

but not defeated.
“Family of Elena Santos?”
Mia rushed over to him. “How is she? Is she going to be okay?”
“We were able to get most of the toxin out of her bloodstream. She’s going to make a full recovery but it was close. If we hadn’t hadn’t gotten to her when we did…” He shook his head. “She’s very lucky.”
Mia’s knees gave out and she almost fell to the floor. Stefan caught her and held her up as relief flooded through her body.
“Can I see her?” Mia asked through her tears.
“She’s still unconscious from the anesthesia but you can sit with her. Room 314.”
As soon as the doctor walked away, Mia’s relief turned into anger. Pure, burning anger. She looked around the waiting area and realized someone was missing.
“Where is Mose?” she asked Stefan. “Where the hell is Mose? My friend almost died because of him and he’s not even here?”
Stefan put his hands up trying to calm her down. “Mia, let’s just focus on Elena right now. We can deal with everything else later.”
“No! I want to know where he is right now. Elena was fighting for her life and he couldn’t even bother to show up?”
Stefan looked uncomfortable. “He’s here. He’s just… he’s outside.”
“Outside? OUTSIDE?” Mia’s voice got louder and several people in the waiting room turned to look at them. What do you mean he’s outside?”

Without waiting for an answer, Mia stormed toward the elevators. Stefan tried to catch up with her but she was already pushing the button repeatedly.
“Mia, wait. Let me explain.”
“Explain what? That the man who claims to love Elena can’t even be bothered to come inside while she’s dying?

When they got outside, Mia spotted Mose immediately. He was standing by the side of the building in the shadows looking like he was trying to disappear into the wall.
Mia marched over to him with Stefan trailing behind her trying to stop what he knew was about to happen.
“What are you doing out here?” Mia yelled pointing her finger right at his chest. “What are you doing standing out here when my friend, YOUR FIANCÉ, was fighting for her life?”
People walking by stopped to stare. Some of them started pulling out their phones.
“This is all your fault!” Mia continued screaming. “All of this is YOUR fault! She’s in there because of you and all you can do is stand out here like a coward?”

Mose didn’t say anything. He just stood there staring at the ground like he was ashamed to even look at her.
“She needed you in there! She needed you by her side and where were you? Hiding outside like you don’t even care!”
Stefan was trying to pull Mia away but she shrugged him off. More people were gathering now and she could see phones recording but she didn’t care.
“Say something!” she yelled at Mose. “Say anything! But no, you’ll just keep quiet like you always do. Keep quiet and pretend like none of this is your fault.”
Mose still didn’t respond. He just stood there taking every word she threw at him.
“You know what? Don’t bother coming back. Don’t you dare show your face here anymore.” She turned to Stefan with tears streaming down her face. “Tell him to leave Elena alone. I don’t want to see him near her ever again.”
Stefan looked between Mia and Mose. He could see the pain in both of their faces. Mose was waiting to see what Stefan would choose. Would he pick his woman or his best friend?
To Mose’s surprise and hurt, Stefan nodded slowly. “Maybe you should go, Mose. At least for tonight.”
The betrayal on Mose’s face was clear. He had expected Stefan to have his back no matter what. But Stefan was choosing Mia over him.
Mose looked at them both for a long moment before dropping his head and walking away without saying a word.
“And don’t bother coming back!” Mia called after him.
Mose didn’t turn around. He just kept walking toward the road.
Within minutes, videos of the confrontation were all over social media. People were taking sides. Some supported Mia for defending her friend. Others criticized Stefan for abandoning his best friend. The comments were brutal. 1
“Stefan just threw Mose away like trash.”
“How can you choose a woman over your brother?”
“Mose deserves better friends than that.”
“Team Mia all the way. That man put Elena in danger.”
Inside the hospital, someone wearing scrubs watched the drama unfold through the window.
