Chapter 148
“Elena, I already told you that I can’t love you,” James started before she could even open her mouth. His voice was flat and emotionless,
“I thought I made that clear the last time we talked. You’re wasting your time, Elena. You should stop. You’d only hurt yourself trying to chase shadows.”
Elena looked at him confused. He thought she was here to beg him, for what? To take her back?
What was he feeling like? It seems like this James doesn’t know who the real Elena is.
And the way he was looking at her like she was someone who had been bothering him for too long.
“Chill, dude. That’s not why I’m here,” Elena said quietly.
James blinked, clearly surprised. He lifted his head and studied her face more carefully, like he was trying to figure out if she was telling the truth.
“It’s not?” he asked, confusion evident in his voice.
She shook her head and took a deep breath. Though this was harder than she had expected it to be, but she knew it
was necessary.
“I want us to break up,” she said simply.
James’s eyebrows shot up so high they almost disappeared into his hairline. He leaned back in his chair and stared at her like she had just told him she was planning to fly to the moon.
“You want to what?” he asked.
“I want us to officially end this,” Elena explained, her voice growing stronger with each word.
“I’ve heard how you don’t feel anything to you, how you want me to move on. But, I feel like I should do this. I want to do this, want to break the promise.”
James looked even more confused now. “What promise?”
Elena smiled sadly and gestured towards the hospital.
“I’m doing this here, close to this hospital, because that was where I made you a promise a year ago,” she said.
“The promise I made to you on that call, when you had called to tell me about your reckless plans. You’d made me promise I’d wait for you, and that even if you didn’t remember me anymore, I’ll make you do.
But I can’t do it anymore Mose, I’ve lost myself in the process and that’s not who I am.” She looked at him with a painful expression. All the pains she’d held into became bare.
There was no need hiding and pretending anymore, she doesn’t care. She just wants to be happy with someone he loves her. She’s tired of everything already.
“I refuse to be the Elena that wait for scraps. I’m greatful for all you did and that’s why I’m doing this. I hope you understand wherever you are Mose.”
Understanding dawned on James’s face, but he still looked puzzled about why she was bringing this up now.

“But I can’t keep that promise anymore,” Elena continued. “I can’t keep waiting for someone who doesn’t exist anymore. I need to choose myself for once. I need to find my own happiness, just like you said I should.”
James nodded slowly, his expression softening slightly. “Okay,” he said. “I think that’s probably for the best. I’m sure that’s what Mose would have wanted.”
She raised her brow at his words. He’d called his name like it had belonged to someone different, maybe her Mose was dead.
This wasn’t who she loves, it’s better this way.
“I’m sorry that you had to hear those awful things I said earlier,” She said, her voice full of genuine regret. “It wasn’t my intention to hurt you or anyone else. I was angry and scared and I said things I shouldn’t have said.”
“It’s okay,” James said, though Elena could tell it wasn’t really okay. “I understand you were upset.”
Elena shook her head. “No, it’s not okay. What I said was cruel and unfair. But I need you to understand something.

James waited for her to continue.
“There’s a reason Mose used Mia as an excuse to put his life in danger,” Elena said carefully. “He knew that I love her more than almost anyone in the world. He knew that if I thought she was in real danger, I would do anything to protect her, even if it meant letting him go.”
James frowned, trying to follow her logic.
“But because of my feelings for you – for the man you used to be – I ended up hurting the one person I care about most,” Elena continued, her voice thick with emotion. “I almost made her lose her baby because I couldn’t control my anger and pain. And I can’t forgive myself for that.”
She paused and looked directly into James’s eyes.
“So I want us to end everything between us, entirely” she said firmly. “I want to close this chapter of my life and start a new one.”
James nodded again, and this time there was something that might have been relief in his expression.
“I think that’s the right decision,” he said.
Elena smiled, and for the first time in months, it was a real smile that reached her eyes.
“I want us to have one last hug,” she said. “A goodbye hug. Is that okay?”
He hesitated for a moment, but then he nodded. “Yeah, I think that would be okay.”
They both stood up from their chairs, James opened his arms, and she stepped into them, letting herself be held one final time by this man who was the person she had loved but wasn’t him at all.
The hug was gentle and sad and final. Elena closed her eyes and tried to memorize the feeling, knowing it would be the last time she would ever be this close to him.
She could smell his familiar cologne, could feel the steady rhythm of his breathing, could remember for just a moment what it had felt like when he held her like he meant it.
But when she opened her eyes, she felt nothing but peace. This was the right thing to do. This was how it was supposed to end.
