THAT’S WHAT MOSE WOULD HAVE WANTED
Chapter 149
“Ethan!” Elena called out desperately, her voice echoing off the walls. “Ethan, wait!”
But he didn’t stop. If anything, he walked faster, his long strides carrying him quickly down the road. Elena could see the rigid set of his shoulders, the way he held his head like he was trying to escape from something painful.
“Where are you going?” Elena asked breathlessly when she finally caught up to him, her chest rising and falling rapidly from running.
Ethan stopped walking but didn’t turn around to face her. She could see his reflection in the glass doors ahead of them, and his expression looked like someone who had just watched their world crumble.
“I need to get something from my apartment,” he said, his voice carefully controlled, like he was working hard to keep his emotions in check. “The doctor said Mia would be discharged soon, though I don’t know exactly when. She’ll need some things from home.”
.
His excuse sounded hollow, even to his own ears. They both knew he wasn’t really thinking about Mia’s discharge needs right now. And which home was he talking about.
“Please don’t walk away,” Elena said, moving around to stand in front of him so he couldn’t avoid looking at her. ” I want to talk to you. I need to explain what you just saw in there.”
Ethan finally looked at her, and she felt her heart break at the pain she saw in his eyes. It was the kind of hurt that came from having your worst fears confirmed, from watching the person you love choose someone else right in front of you.
“There’s nothing to discuss,” he said quietly, his voice flat and defeated: “I already know what you’re going to say, and it’s fine. I understand. I really do.”
“No, you don’t understand,” Elena said desperately, reaching out like she wanted to touch him but not quite daring to. “You don’t know what just happened in there. You don’t know what that conversation was about.”
“I saw enough,” Ethan said, and now his voice was getting harder, like he was building walls around himself. “I saw you hugging him. I saw the way you looked at each other, the way you held him. You said you had something important to do, and I guess now I know what was so important to you!”
Each word felt like a knife twisting in Elena’s chest. She could hear the betrayal in his voice, the way he was trying to sound understanding when she could see how much he was hurting.
“You can go be with him,” Ethan continued, his words coming faster now, like he needed to get them all out before he lost his nerve completely. “Even though I love you, I don’t mind if it’s Mose who makes you happy. I just want you to be happy, Elena. Even if it’s not with me. Even if it kills me to watch.”
Elena’s eyes widened in shock, her mouth falling open slightly. Had he just said what she thought he said?
“Did you just say you love me?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Ethan’s face flushed red, and he looked away from her like he was embarrassed. Like he hadn’t meant to let that slip out in the middle of what he thought was him stepping aside gracefully.
“I… that’s not the point,” he stammered, running a hand through his hair in frustration. “The point is that you should be with whoever makes you happy, and if that’s…”
Elena didn’t let him finish. Before he could say another word, she stepped forward and pressed her lips to his,

cutting off his sentence with a kiss that was soft and sweet and full of everything she couldn’t find words to
express.
For a moment, Ethan was too surprised to respond. His eyes were wide open, staring at her in complete shock. But then he seemed to realize what was happening, and his eyes fluttered closed as he kissed her back with all the longing he had been holding inside.
Elena’s hands came up to cup his face, her thumbs brushing against his cheekbones as she deepened the kiss.
She could taste the coffee he had been drinking earlier, could feel the slight stubble on his jaw beneath her fingers. For a moment, nothing else existed except this connection between them.
When they finally broke apart, both of them were breathing hard, their foreheads resting against each other.
“What was that for?” Ethan asked, his voice rough with emotion and confusion.
“You said you love me,” Elena said, her eyes bright with tears that she was trying hard not to let fall.
“I didn’t mean to,” Ethan admitted, looking embarrassed and vulnerable. “It just slipped out. I wasn’t supposed to tell you that.”
“I’m glad it did,” Elena said with a smile that was so radiant it made Ethan’s heart skip a beat.
But then reality seemed to crash back down on him, and he shook his head, stepping back from her slightly.
“Elena, you don’t have to do this,” he said, his voice pained. “You don’t have to try to make me feel better. I saw you with him. I know how you feel about him, and that’s okay. It really is.”
“You saw me saying goodbye to him,” Elena corrected gently, her voice steady and clear. “You saw me ending things with him once and for all.”
Ethan blinked in confusion, like he couldn’t process what she was saying.
