Chapter 157
“Mom? What are you doing here?” Ethan asked, his voice filled with frustration and complete disbelief.
His mother had never been to his place before, not once since he moved into this penthouse.
Of course, he thought bitterly. The first time she decides to visit, it has to be at the worst possible moment.
Elena felt her heart drop into her stomach as she looked at the elegant woman sitting in Ethan’s living room.
This was not how she had imagined meeting her potential future mother-in-law.
Half-naked, disheveled, with Ethan’s shirt hanging open and her lipstick smeared across both their faces.
Cassandra Meyer sat perfectly poised on the expensive leather couch, but her face was twisted with disgust as her eyes moved slowly from her son to Elena. She looked like she was staring at something unpleasant.
“You haven’t been taking my calls anymore,” Cassandra said, her voice dripping with the kind of fake hurt that only mothers could perfect.
“You don’t make time for your mother these days. You cancel our lunches, you don’t come to dinner. Is she the reason you’ve changed toward me?”
Ethan’s hands flew to his hair, running through it and messing up what was left of his styled look completely.
“Mom, you and I both know exactly why I’ve been avoiding your calls,” Ethan said, his voice tired and strained.
Every single conversation they had these days was the same. Cassandra would spend the entire time talking about how Mia was a snake who was only after Samuel’s money and property.
Ethan had gotten exhausted trying to make his mother see things differently, but she refused to listen to anything positive about his sister.
“Isn’t this exactly what I’ve been trying to tell you?” Cassandra continued, gesturing dramatically toward Elena.
“That two-faced bitch you call your sister knows she can’t succeed alone, so she’s sent her little friend here to help complete her work.”
Elena raised an eyebrow but kept a smile on her face, even though she could feel anger boiling inside her chest.
She’s lucky she gave birth to Ethan, she thought, her hands clenching into fists at her sides. That’s literally the only thing saving her from being dragged across this room by her perfectly styled hair.
But she couldn’t do that. This was Ethan’s mother. No matter how awful she was being, Elena had to be the bigger person here.
“Mom, please don’t do this here and now,” Ethan said, and Elena could hear the warning in his voice. “Not tonight.”
“We absolutely will discuss this here,” Cassandra replied sharply, her voice rising. “I want to know what you think you’re doing with this Mia wannabe. Can’t you see what’s happening? Can’t you see how they’re manipulating you?”
Elena continued to smile, but her jaw was starting to hurt from the effort of keeping her expression pleasant. She could feel her patience wearing thin despite her best efforts.

“Mom!” Ethan yelled suddenly, his voice echoing through the apartment.
Both women stared at him in complete shock. Elena had never heard Ethan raise his voice at anyone, let alone his own mother. He was always so calm and controlled, so respectful and diplomatic.
But here he was, defending her with a fierceness that made her heart race and her chest tighten with emotion.
“You will not speak to my fiancée that way,” Ethan said firmly, his words hanging in the air like a bomb that had just exploded.
The silence that followed was deafening. Elena felt her mouth fall open slightly, and she could see Cassandra’s face go through several different expressions shock, disbelief, anger, and something that might have been fear.
Fiancée.The word echoed in Elena’s mind. This definitely wasn’t how she had imagined Cassandra would learn about their engagement.
She had pictured a nice dinner, maybe some flowers, Ethan formally asking for his parents’ blessing. Not this chaotic scene with her half-dressed in his living room.
Samuel Meyer is going to be my father-in-law, Elena thought with dark amusement. The same man who ordered a hit that nearly destroyed everyone I love.
The man who had hurt Mia in so many ways. What a twisted joke the universe is playing.
Cassandra looked like she had been physically slapped. Her face went pale, then red, then pale again as she processed what her son had just said.
“Engaged?” she whispered, her voice barely audible. “You’re engaged to this… this…”
“I would appreciate it if you would excuse us now,” Ethan said, his voice calmer but still carrying that steel underneath. “Please, Mom. Leave.”
Cassandra slowly stood up from the couch, her legs seeming unsteady. Elena could see her hands shaking as she reached for her purse.
“I’ll leave,” she said, her voice getting stronger and more venomous with each word. “But over my dead body will I allow you to bring this nobody into my family. Do you hear me? Over my dead body will this girl become a Meyer.
Never.”
She stormed toward the door, her expensive high heels clicking angrily against the hardwood floor. The sound echoed through the apartment long after she was gone and the door had slammed shut behind her.
The silence that followed felt heavy and oppressive. Elena could hear her own heartbeat in her ears.
Ethan turned to face her, and she could see the regret and embarrassment written all over his face.
“Elena, I am so, so sorry you had to witness that,” he said quietly, his voice full of shame. “I’m mortified that you had to hear those words from my mother.”
“It’s okay,” Elena said, though her smile now had a sharp edge to it that hadn’t been there before. “She’s your mother. I understand that she’s protective of you.”
Protective is one word for it, Elena thought. Psychotic might be more accurate.
“That’s what makes it even more embarrassing,” Ethan replied, running his hands through his already disheveled hair again. “The fact that my own mother would say those awful things in front of you,
to your
face.”
“She’s just looking out for you,” Elena said, her voice still pleasant. “I can’t hold that against her. But she better
