Chapter 159
Ethan threw on his clothes as fast as humanly possible, his hands shaking slightly as he buttoned his shirt. He leaned down and kissed Elena quickly, tasting the worry on her lips.
“I’m coming with you,” Elena said, starting to get out of bed.
“No,” Ethan said firmly, gently pushing her back down. “Let me handle this. My father can be… difficult when he’s angry. I don’t want you to have to deal with more of his attitude today.”
Elena watched him go, her stomach churning with anxiety because she knows exactly what Samuel Meyer was capable of.
Through the thin walls of the apartment, she could hear muffled voices from the living room, Ethan’s measured tone and Samuel’s deeper, more aggressive one.
Downstairs, Samuel stood with his arms crossed, his entire body radiating fury. His usually perfect hair was slightly disheveled, like he had been running his hands through it, and his expensive suit looked so clean and polished. He’d always look neat, always.
“What is it I’m hearing about last night?” Samuel asked without letting Ethan get down the stairs completely, his voice deadly quiet.
“I don’t understand what you’re asking, Dad,” Ethan replied, though his stomach was already sinking because he had a pretty good idea where this conversation was heading.
“Who the fuck did you bring back to your apartment last night?” Samuel’s voice was getting louder, more aggressive.
Ethan felt his own anger starting to rise. He was a grown man living in his own place, and his father was questioning him like he was a teenager who had missed curfew.
“I brought my fiancée to my home, Dad,” Ethan said, running his hands through his hair in frustration: “And I don’t understand why that should be a problem for you.”
The word ‘fiancée’ seemed to hit Samuel like a physical blow. His face went pale, then flushed red with anger.
Ethan couldn’t help but wonder desperately why his parents wouldn’t leave him alone, why they always feel like they have the right to control every aspect of his life.
“I want you to end whatever nonsense is happening between you and that girl before today is over,” Samuel said with the tone of someone giving a final ultimatum. Then he turned toward the door like the conversation was finished.
“That’s not going to happen, Dad,” Ethan said quietly, but his words carried clearly across the living room.
Samuel stopped walking and turned around slowly, like he couldn’t believe what he had just heard.
“What did you just say to me?” He looked completely shocked. This was the first time in Ethan’s entire life that he had openly defied his father’s direct order.
“I said I can’t end our relationship,” Ethan repeated, this time louder and with more conviction. “We’re engaged, and I plan on marrying her whether you approve or not.”
Upstairs, Elena pressed her ear against the door, her heart pounding as she listened to Ethan defend their

relationship. She had never heard him speak to his father with such firm determination.
He’s really willing to fight his whole family for me, she realized, feeling a mixture of love and guilt wash over her.
“I’m going to pretend I didn’t hear you say that,” Samuel said slowly, his voice carrying a warning,
“But you did hear me, Dad,” Ethan continued, his confidence growing, with each word. “You heard me, and you need to accept it.”
Samuel raised an eyebrow but didn’t turn around to face his son. He seemed to be struggling to maintain his
composure.
“She isn’t just my fiancée anymore,” Ethan called after him. “She’s going to be my wife.”
Samuel still didn’t stop walking. He refused to engage in this argument any further because he couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
He wouldn’t accept that both of his children had turned against him.
Not after everything he’d done to give them good lives, he thought bitterly. Now they’ve both ganged up against him. But needs need to act fast before this gets as out of control as Mia’s situation did.
The idea of his son marrying Elena Santos – a girl whose mother had been nothing more than a household employee, a nanny – made his blood boil. Over his dead body would he allow his children to throw away their lives like this.
They’ll all regret going against him Samuel thought as he walked away, Mia thinks she got away from what what she did to him, but that’s exactly what he wanted. So when he’s ready to strike, no one will be able to point a finger at him.
Ethan stood in the living staring after his father’s retreating figure, hardly able to believe what had just happened
He had never spoken back to his dad before, had always shown him the respect he demanded.
The fact that Samuel had left his office on a weekend to come confront them showed just how seriously he was taking this situation.
But today, something had changed. Today, he had chosen Elena over his father’s approval.
When he got back upstairs, Elena was already dressed and waiting for him, her face full of concern.
“Are you okay?” she asked immediately. “I heard some of what happened downstairs.”
Ethan nodded, though he still looked shaken by the confrontation.
