“Agreed,” Ethan said. “And I want to do it today, before they hear it from the press or whoever.”

They drove to Stefan’s house, where they found everyone gathered in the back garden. Mia was sitting on Stefan’s lap, both of them giggling at something on their phone while James sat nearby with Sienna, the two of them having what looked like an intense conversation about something.

“Elena!” Mia squealed the moment she saw her best friend.

She immediately tried to stand up and run over, but Stefan caught her around the waist.

“You need to be careful,” he lectured gently. “Remember what the doctor said about taking it easy.”

Mia rolled her eyes at her overprotective husband but slowed down as she walked to Elena.

“You’re absolutely glowing,” Mia said with a teasing smile that made Elena blush immediately.

While Elena and Mia hugged, Ethan walked over to greet Stefan with their usual handshake and back pat.

“I have something to show you,” Elena said to Mia, holding out her left hand.

When Mia saw the engagement ring, her mouth fell open in shock. Then she let out another squeal and pulled Elena into an even tighter hug.

“Oh my God! When did this happen? Tell me everything!” Mia demanded.

Sienna came over to congratulate them, followed by James, who shook Ethan’s hand and gave Elena a polite nod. There was something unreadable in his expression, but he seemed genuine in his good wishes. 1

Over the next three days, Elena and Ethan threw themselves into planning their wedding. They decided to keep simple – just a courthouse ceremony with their closest friends and family members.

Ethan had insisted on taking Elena to meet his parents properly, despite what had happened with his father. Th visit had been even worse just as Elena had expected, but she’d done it for Ethan. She was doing all these for him

Samuel had been coldly polite but clearly hostile, while Cassandra had been openly rude, making snide comments about Elena’s background and questioning her motives.

They had been essentially thrown out of the Meyer family home, but Elena and Ethan refused to let that stop them.

Elena’s mother, on the other hand, had welcomed Ethan with open arms. She had blessed their union with tears of joy in her eyes, telling Elena that she could see how much Ethan loved her daughter.

“That’s all I ever wanted for you, my child” her mother had said. “Someone who looks at you like you’re his whole world.”

The night before their wedding, Elena tossed and turned in her bed at Stefan’s house. She had moved back there temporarily while they finalized the last details of their move-in plans for after the honeymoon.

Something felt wrong. She couldn’t shake the feeling that something bad was about to happen, though she couldn’t put her finger on what it might be. Every time she started to drift off to sleep, anxiety would jolt her awake again.

It’s just pre-wedding nerves, she told herself. Every bride feels nervous the night before her wedding.

But this felt different from normal nervousness. This felt like dread.

After tossing around for hours, she finally fell into a restless sleep just before dawn.

The next morning, she stood in front of the mirror in her bedroom and smiled despite her lingering anxiety. She looked beautiful in her simple white dress and light makeup.

She had chosen a classic, elegant style rather than anything flashy or dramatic.

She couldn’t believe this is how she’s getting married, she thought, adjusting her hair one final time.

She had always imagined herself having a huge, elaborate wedding with hundreds of guests. But somehow, this felt right. This felt like them.

The feeling of dread was still there, lurking in the back of her mind, but she pushed it down and focused on the happiness of the moment.

They arrived at the courthouse right on time. Stefan had offered to drive them in his car, with Mia riding despite her protests that she felt fine and didn’t need special treatment.

James and Sienna followed in another car, and Elena’s mother rode with them.

These were the most important people in their lives right now, and Elena felt grateful that they were all there to support them.

As they walked toward the courthouse entrance, Elena’s heart was beating fast with excitement and happiness.

In just a few minutes, she would be Mrs. Elena Meyer. After everything they had been through, after all the family drama and obstacles, they were actually doing this.

“Elena Santos?”

The voice came from behind them, and Elena turned around to see several men in dark suits approaching th

group.

“Yes?” Elena replied, confused but not yet alarmed.

“Elena Santos, you are under arrest for the murder of Mrs. Cassandra Meyer.”

The words hit Elena like a physical blow. She felt the world tilt sideways as one of the men stepped forward with handcuffs.

“What?” Ethan shouted, immediately moving to stand between Elena and the officers. “What are you talking about? My mom is dead? What are you talking about?” They did as if they weren’t the one he was talking to, they only focus on the task before them.

Arrest the suspect.

“Ma’am, you have the right to remain silent,” the lead officer continued, completely ignoring Ethan’s protests.” Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.”

Elena’s mouth moved soundlessly as she tried to process what was happening. Cassandra was dead? Ethan’s mom? And they thought she had killed her?

She turned her gaze to Ethan who looked lost and confused.

“This is a mistake,” Stefan said firmly, stepping forward with his phone already in his hand. “My lawyers will sort this out immediately. When did Cassandra die?”
