Chapter 88
With my legs tucked under me I sat on the floor trying to control my breathing as the room seemed to enclose me. I was dazed by the intense surge of emotions from the past and my mind was racing. Everything had vanished including the kitchen the subtle hum of the refrigerator and the slight smell of cooking.
The womans terrified face the shadowy figure pursuing her and the deafening silence that had followed my abrupt burst of memories were all could hear. Before I could even comprehend the amount of time that had passed I sensed Alexanders presence at my side.
As his shadow hung over me I blinked up at him my chest constricted by the worry in his eyes. His eyes never left mine as he knelt before me.
“Ava” he uttered quietly his voice warm but tinged with a distinct concern. “Why are you in here at this hour?”
In an attempt to get rid of the lingering memory that had taken hold of me I swallowed hard. “I. I was hungry” I muttered my voice faltering as I forced a grudging smile. “I needed to eat something.”
His gaze swept over my face as though seeking an answer to an unspoken question and I could feel him examining me. His voice trailed off a bit as if he sensed there was more to it. “Is that all?” he asked.
I nodded but the heavy unsaid words remained in my throat. I felt as though I was being choked by the shadows of the woman running her fear evident and the man pursuing her. I was baffled as to why of all times I was experiencing those flashbacks now.
Why was that woman in my memory of all places and who was she? In an attempt to dispel the confusion I shook my head but the questions
seemed to get more intense. The recollection had been too real too vivid.
However I was unable to locate it. I was unaware of her identity the reason behind her running or the reason her fear seemed so familiar. AS though sensing the battle going on inside of me Alexander took my hand gently.
He whispered “Let me to help you. Its obvious that youre not in the right frame of mind to be by yourself at this moment.”
Even though my thoughts were constantly straying to the past his touch was reassuring and helped me stay grounded in the present. Softly but steadily he continued “I’ll have a maid help you with your dinner and I’ll have them clean up the broken glass. But for the time being Ava vou ought to return to your room. Get some rest. Please.”
I didnt object. Something about his serene demeanor made it difficult to resist. I just wanted the security of my room and the comfort of something familiar because the weight on my chest was too much to bear. It was comforting to consider that the maid would prepare my meal something that would take no work on my part.
me as we moved through the houses hallways His hand remained in mine as we walked. I became aware of how much I needed him here with because of his sure and steady steps. Particularly at this moment when I felt so vulnerable I needed his help and his quiet strength.
As we arrived at my room he stopped at the door and gave me that same tender look that always seemed to calm my racing mind,
He said quietly “Ava sit on the bed. I’ll bring your glass of water over right away.”
I complied sitting on the beds edge and nervously pulling at my robes hem. I kept feeling as though something had changed inside of me while
I waited for him. Even though I could still clearly recall the fight the pain and the memories of Liam they now seemed remote almost as if they belonged to someone else.
