Mandy, on the other hand, exploded first. She screeched, her voice like nails on a chalkboard. “Chief Rigby! What is the meaning of this? We’re the victims here! We haven’t even finished our medical exams at the hospital, and you-”

Corey cut her off, not caring one bit about her theatrics. His tone was as cold as the steel table in front of him. “Shut it! This is the police station. We deal in law here, not chaos. Keep your mouth shut.”

Mick’s face darkened.

He prided himself as a military man, and no one in his circle had ever dared speak to him–or his family–like that before.

He tried to keep his temper, but his words still came out with a heavy dose of arrogance. “Chief Rigby, you’d better watch your tone. I’m a colonel in the Kingdom’s military, and you-”

Corey didn’t even blink. With the Hewitts behind him, he felt invincible. “Colonel, I don’t care about your rank or your connections. Here, the law is king. If you broke it, it’s my job to investigate and enforce the law. Got it?”

Mick choked on his words, his face turning a shade grayer with each second.

He never expected this old man to stand his ground.

Corey wasted no more time.

He took the lead himself and ordered Mick and Mandy to each give their version of the story.

Mick and Mandy tried to flip the truth upside down.

They insisted Elizabeth and her group bullied their kids first. They claimed they only tried to reason with her, and then Elizabeth just snapped and attacked. Mick even said he was caught off guard and never even fought back.

Mick jabbed a finger at his son and nephew, both sporting swollen faces. “Look at our injuries! You think we did this to ourselves? That’s all the proof you need.”

Mandy’s voice turned weepy, and she clung to her performance like a lifeline. “Look at my son and nephew! They’re black and blue. My husband’s probably got internal injuries too! Please, Chief, you have to help us!”

He nodded to the tech cop, who brought up the security footage on the big screen.

Clear video played, showing everything–Terence purposely kicking a ball at Tasha and mocking her, Elizabeth stepping in, Mick trying to hit Tasha without even asking what happened, and the three kids fighting back.

It even showed Mick and Mandy storming in, hands raised to strike, with every ugly word and gesture caught on tape.

Mick and Mandy’s faces drained of all color as the footage rolled on.

Mandy gasped, her voice cracking. “The cameras were supposed to be broken!”

Corey didn’t even look at her. “Justice doesn’t care about your excuses. You can’t just say ‘the cameras broke‘ and erase the truth.”

Mick saw the walls closing in and tried to change the subject. He jabbed a finger at Tasha. “Okay, maybe I did act out of line, but she’s my daughter! I’ve got every right to discipline my own kid. Elizabeth had no right to step in!”

Tasha snapped her head up, tears shining in her eyes. “You’re not my dad. I don’t have a father who betrays his wife, abandons his daughter, and acts like a monster. I cut you off a long time ago!”

Mick’s voice shook as he lashed out, “You ungrateful brat! I’ll slap you right now!” He tried to recover, turning to everyone else.

“See? She won’t even recognize her own father! What’s wrong with disciplining a kid like that?”

Elizabeth put an arm around Tasha, holding her steady. Her voice rang out with cold curiosity. “So, you’re claiming Tasha’s your daughter?”

Mick lifted his chin. “Of course. Blood doesn’t lie.”
