After she finished speaking, Elizabeth reached out to shove Hannah and Zachary aside. She didn’t want to waste another second talking to them.
But Zachary suddenly grabbed her wrist. He moved fast. His grip was tight. It hurt enough to make her frown.
He looked heartbroken, like some tragic hero in a drama. His voice was deep and emotional. “Eliza, stop throwing a tantrum! I know you blame us for sending you to the military court. But you were the one who made a mistake first! No matter what, we’re family. Benjamin is still your father. If there’s a misunderstanding, we can go home and talk it out slowly. Everything can be cleared up…
“Eliza!” His voice sounded heavy with fake pain. “I know you resent us! You think Hannah and I wronged you. You think Benjamin favored her! But think about it. If you hadn’t done something so foolish back then, how could we possibly have…”
He stopped on purpose. He left the sentence hanging, letting the crowd fill in the blanks. It made it sound like Elizabeth had truly done something wrong.
Hannah quickly picked up the act. Her eyes turned red at once. Her voice trembled. “Zachary, stop… Eliza was just confused back then… She…”
Then she turned to Elizabeth with a “sincere” look. “Let the past go. Dad knows he was wrong. He regrets being too strict with you. After you were exiled, he thought about you every single day! Now you’re back, and you’ve married into such a great family. He’s so happy! Families don’t hold grudges forever. Come home with us. Dad is waiting for you.”
Zachary tightened his grip on Elizabeth’s wrist, afraid she might run. His tone became firmer. More. forceful. Like he was giving orders for her own good.
“Eliza, Hannah is right! Stop being stubborn! You’ve been through so much. Yes, you married General Hewitt, but the Hewitts are a powerful family. You’re alone. If you get bullied in the future, who will support you? Come back to Schofield Castle. With the Schofields backing you, the Hewitts will respect you more. We’re thinking about your future!”
Elizabeth felt sick listening to them. Hannah acting weak and loving. Zachary acting noble and reasonable. It was disgusting.
She had enough.
The moment Zachary finished speaking, Elizabeth twisted her wrist sharply. She broke free in one quick move. Then she raised her hand.
Slap! Slap!
Two loud, crisp slaps echoed in the air. One landed on Zachary’s face. The other on Hannah’s.
It happened so fast that neither of them reacted in time.
A clear red handprint appeared on Zachary’s cheek. Hannah’s head snapped to the side. Her carefully styled hair came loose. Her face burned with pain.

The area fell silent. Everyone watching was stunned.
Elizabeth shook her slightly numb hand. Then she pointed at them. Her voice was clear and full of anger.
“Damn! You say you’re thinking about my future? Zachary. Hannah. Have you got no shame?
“Who was it that worked together to frame me? Who blamed me for drugging someone and personally sent me to military court? Who got me exiled to Trash Planet? Now that I married into a powerful family, you suddenly say we’re ‘family‘? You want to support me? Do you really think I need your support? Whether the Hewitts respect me or not has nothing to do with you!
“You said I’ve been through so much. What have I been through? I was almost killed on Trash Planet because of you two scumbags! And now you stand here pretending to be good people? Your fake faces make me sick!”
Zachary covered his swollen cheek. He had never been humiliated like this in his life. Not in public. Not by a woman he used to look down on.
