Abigail
With the way everyone was looking at me, you would think I’d grown an elephant trunk overnight.
Now I almost wish I had, though. At least I could swipe them all in the face with it and tell them to mind their own business.
The conference room felt smaller than usual.
I sat to Finnegan’s right with my tablet open, taking notes like the perfect executive assistant I was.
But I could feel the weight of dozens of eyes burning into me from around the long table. Some were curious, some were shocked, and some looked like I’d pissed in their coffee.
This morning had been even worse. When Finnegan and I walked into the building together — I knew he’d said he wasn’t going to hide us anymore, but I didn’t know that meant kissing my knuckles as he helped me out of the car in front of the entire building.
He had to know what that would do, because everyone gasped. Even James had a smirk on his face. He had recovered from the accident, and despite Finnegan trying to get him to resign, he’d insisted on staying on.
When we walked in, the ground floor went dead silent. Heads turned, whispers erupted the second we passed. I didn’t catch half of what was said, and I didn’t care, because I loved him.
And he loved me. The rest of the world could choke on its gossip. Finnegan’s voice stayed calm and commanding as he led the meeting for the last quarter of the year.
I could hardly believe it. I’d started working at Wolfe Corp in March, and now it was October.
Nine solid months.
Before February fourteenth, I’d thought I would spend the rest of my life with Drake. Now he was out of the state, and I’d fallen in love with the absolute love of my life.
It was terrifying in a good way. Finnegan’s hand brushed mine under the table, giving it a little squeeze, while his face kept that blank, professional look. I bit back a smile and tried to focus on taking notes.
I’d seen Kate mouth Lunch at me from the reception desk when we walked past that morning.
Lunch couldn’t come fast enough. I met Marcus, Kate, and Ted at our usual table in the restaurant. The moment I sat down, three pairs of wide eyes locked on me.
"Oh my God, spill," Kate whispered, leaning forward so fast her necklace nearly dipped into her salad.
"You and Mr. Wolfe? For real? We saw the photos and the headline, I almost fainted."
Marcus grinned like an idiot. "I knew it. The way he looks at you during meetings? Man was done for."
Ted just shook his head, laughing. "After all the chaos with his brother... we saw the news. Is Devin Wolfe responsible for your parents’ death? That’s insane, Abby. Are you okay?"
I took a deep breath and let it out slowly.
"I’m... dealing with it," I admitted honestly.
"It’s a lot. The man who killed my parents is Finnegan’s twin brother. It’s been a nightmare. But we’re handling it. Devin is in custody now."
Kate reached over and squeezed my hand. "And you and the boss?! Girl, that’s huge. I swear,"
