Finnegan
I should have felt something. Anything at all. Maybe a bit of anticipation, or even mild dread, but all I felt was the same hollow feeling I’d always had for years.
My birthdays had never been about me. They were either about Devin, and when he supposedly died, they were always a business decision.
Mother hosted a gala every year, lavish galas where I was trotted out like some prize stallion. Another year of Wolfe Corp’s stock rising. Another year of Finnegan being the perfect heir.
The only times my birthdays had felt like mine were the times I spent with Angel, River, and my friends but this year felt different.
I glanced through the glass wall of my office. I’d had the curtains removed Monday, at the start of the week when Abigail and I got back to work.
Technically it was to let in more natural light, but really it was just so I could see her. Abigail was half-perched on her desk, phone pressed to her ear, gesturing animatedly with her free hand.
Even from here I could see the bright smile on her face, the way her eyes crinkled at the corners when she laughed.
Seeing her excited made me want to be excited for tomorrow.
God, I love her.
I loved the way she bit her pen when she was concentrating. I loved that she refused to let me buy her a better desk chair, insisting hers had "years of experience" even though it squeaked every time she moved.
I loved that she was here, in my space, in my life, in my world, in my heart, in a way no woman ever had been, in a way I didn’t think was possible.
I glanced back down at my computer screen. I had multiple tabs open, filled with images of engagement rings from exclusive jewelers and custom designers.
I’d been scrolling for days, ever since we’d returned from the island, trying to find the perfect one. Something that matched the fiery, determined woman she was. Something beautiful and timeless, like her.
Nothing felt right yet. Sapphires would match her eyes. Diamonds sparkled like her. Yet nothing seemed enough.
Or maybe this was too soon?
The thought gnawed at me. We’d only been together a few months, and almost every moment had been poisoned by so much trouble — Mother’s schemes, Devin’s insanity, the constant looming threat of danger. I’d barely escaped a marriage built on lies myself.
What if asking her now scared her away? What if she saw it as a trap? What if she wasn’t ready to settle down after everything we’d survived together, and needed a bit of breathing space, and ran because I was too greedy and wanted her permanently mine?
I sighed, dragging my hand down my face, suddenly feeling terrified. There was a stunning sapphire ring that reminded me of her cornflower-blue eyes, and my chest ached like a thousand needles were poking at it.
I wanted forever with her. I wanted to wake up beside her every morning, to build a real family with her and Angel, to grow old with her hand in mine.
