Abigail
The house, especially the kitchen, smelled like vanilla, chocolate, and way too much sugar.
I kicked off my shoes at the door and stalked into the kitchen, where the laughter was coming from.
Annette was perched on a stool, digging her fork into a piece of cake. River was dramatically fanning her mouth, while Angel was arranging little cards next to each dessert sample like a mini event planner.
"You’re late!" Angel accused, pointing a fork at me. "We started without you, Abby."
"Sorry, sorry," I laughed, dropping my bag on the counter. "I had to practically ban Finnegan from coming here. We can’t have him ruining his own birthday surprise, can we? I had Henry come drag him away from the office."
River snorted. "Yeah, Henry already texted me a photo. They’re going fishing. Which is hilarious, because neither of them can fish, and Henry’s talking will scare every fish away."
Annette slid a plate toward me with a slice of dark chocolate cake. We were finalizing the menu, and there was going to be a lot of cake to test because I was a perfectionist, and we had to pick the right one. Finnegan deserved the best tomorrow.
I took a bite and moaned. "Oh my God. This one!"
Angel gestured at the rest of the cake on the table. "There’s like ten more to try!"
For the next hour, the four of us turned the kitchen island into a dessert war. Plates of cake, pastries, and desserts covered every surface while we brainstormed.
Angel leaned over her notebook, her green eyes sparkling excitedly. "I want a memory lane for Dad. Like... baby pictures of me, photos from when he first held me, stuff from when he taught me to ride a bike, or when we got lost in the middle of San Francisco — oh my gosh, Abby, that was so funny, I wish you’d been there to see it."
"Angel, that’s perfect," River nodded, stealing another bite of tiramisu.
Annette grinned, licking frosting off her thumb. "I’m handling the playlist. Be prepared to bask in the hilariousness of SpongeBob SquarePants."
I cackled, shaking my head at her.
Annette raised her glass of wine. "To making the Ice King feel like the luckiest man alive."
"He hasn’t even been the Ice King for a while," I chuckled, earning pointed looks from all of them.
"It’s because of you, duh,"
I blushed at River’s words and reached for two plates of cake we hadn’t tried yet. I just really wanted tomorrow to be perfect. We sank our forks into the cake and watched it fall apart.
"This one," Angel declared, shoving another bite of caramel cake into her mouth. "Dad likes anything with caramel. He always steals mine."
River moaned around her fork. "This lemon blueberry cake is dangerous. I’m taking some to bed."
"Y’all need to lay off," I chuckled and reached for a small piece of the lemon blueberry cake. It looked lovely, with pretty swirls of frosting on top. I brought the fork to my lips and took a bite.
The moment the sweet-tart flavor hit my tongue, my stomach flipped violently.
Oh no.
