“TИ make you keep up the act!” he roared, lunging forward like a cornered animal. He grabbed Lucas by the collar and swung a wild punch straight at his face.
“If I’m going down, you’re coming with me!”
The staff in the villa watched in horror as Lucas was hit, letting out startled cries before rushing to intervene. But the men Alexander had brought with him stepped in, blocking them firmly.
In an instant, the entire living room descended into chaos.
Riley stood perfectly still on the secondfloor landing, her expression icy, looking down at the scene unfolding below.
Her eyes were as calm and still as a frozen winter pond.
She remembered that birthday all too clearly.
Back then, Lucas had indeed been away on a business trip in a neighboring city.
He was supposed to return in time to celebrate with her.
But the night before her birthday, he called–his voice thick with apology and exhaustion–explaining that some urgent issues had come up on the project, delaying him. He promised that once everything was settled, he’d throw her the most lavish birthday party to make it up to her.
Back then, Riley didn’t know he had been with Sophia.
She could even hear the weariness in his voice over the phone and, foolishly, felt sorry for him. She softly told him not to overwork himself, that his health was what mattered, and that birthdays came every year- missing one wasn’t the end of the world.
In the end, Lucas did return, looking tired and disheveled, two days later.
Then, in what felt like a grand performance, he booked the city’s most exclusive rooftop garden to host her belated birthday celebration.
The dazzling lights, roses covering every surface, expensive gifts, and his heartfelt speech in front of everyone…. that day, she became the envy of countless women.
So many people remarked how lucky Riley was–a woman from a modest background who had landed a devoted husband who cherished her and treated her like a queen.
Who could have guessed…
That grand, romantic gesture, that seemingly sincere apology that had moved her for so long, had been nothing more than an elaborate act–a man’s carefully constructed lie to cover up his infidelity, a spectacle born entirely from guilt
At the thought. Riley slowly lowered her gaze.

How pathetic.

Downstairs, the confrontation had already shifted from shouting to a messy, ugly fistfight.
Two men accustomed to privilege had now stripped away every last bit of dignity, wrestling on the floor like common street brawlers.
Lucas‘ tailored suit was twisted out of shape, while Alexander fought like a man possessed, every punch carrying the rage of someone with nothing left to lose.
Riley simply leaned against the secondfloor railing, watching it all coldly.
She let the chaos continue until, during the struggle, an expensive ceramic vase was knocked over and shattered loudly across the floor. Only then did she calmly call the police.
When the officers arrived, the disgraceful scene of two brothers trying to beat each other senseless was finally forced to a halt.
Seizing his chance, Lucas immediately turned the tables. Pointing at a disheveled Alexander, he told the police that the man had broken into the house and assaulted him.
And so, Alexander and his crew–who had only just been released from the precinct–were hauled back in disgrace under Lucas‘ accusations.
With the police cars gone, the noise and commotion faded like a retreating tide. The villa fell into a heavy silence, leaving behind a complete wreck.
Lucas caught his breath, furious, and lifted a hand to his stinging lip. The skin was split and bleeding.
As he turned, his eyes suddenly met Riley’s–cold and sharp as ice.

His heart dropped. Alexander’s accusations, shouted without any regard for saving face, echoed in his mind once more.
Panic set in instantly.
Forgetting his injury, Lucas hurried forward, anxiously explaining to Riley, “Riley, you… you have to believe me. Alexander was talking nonsense! He’s caught up in his own mess and now he’s trying to drag everyone down with him. The guy’s lost his mind!”
Riley looked at him, so desperate to clear his name, and found it all utterly laughable.
She gave a slight nod, as though she actually believed his lies.
Then, turning to a nearby staff member who was trembling nervously, she said, “Go bring the firstaid kit.”
Grateful for an excuse to leave, the attendant rushed off and returned quickly with the kit.
Seeing Riley’s gesture, Lucas felt a flicker of hope.
He expected her to tend to his wounds herself, to offer him comfort the way she used to.
