Sebastian rose to his feet deliberately, his tall frame casting an elegant shadow under the crystal chandelier. His eyes held a faint, unreadable smile.
He arched an eyebrow and replied with a meaningful tone, “That’s not an issue for me.”
Before the words had fully settled, he was already standing before Riley. Leaning slightly forward, he placed his hands on the armrests of the sofa on either side of her, enveloping her in a presence that was both strong and gentle.
His gaze lingered on her, voice low and smooth.
‘In three days, I’ll be calling you Mrs! Torres, won’t I?”
The sudden intimacy of the address, accompanied by his warm breath, brought a soft flush to Riley’s cheeks. She looked up and met his eyes–all her prior calculations and defenses seemed to dissolve in that moment.
A gentle smile touched her lips as she nodded.
‘Yes, Mr. Torres.”
Seeing him falter, Riley’s tone hardened. “You came all this way. I doubt it’s just to chat. If you have something to say, say it.”
Pushed like that, Lucas took a deep breath and looked away from her assessing gaze. “I’m sorry, Riley.
‘That proposal I promised you… it’s not going to happen.”
Riley’s heart didn’t so much as flutter. She simply watched him quietly, waiting for the excuse to unfold.
‘You’ve seen how things are. The Ashfords are in a rough spot right now. I’m still keeping my grandfather’s condition out of the >ress. And Sophia… she’s threatening to go nuclear, ready to blow everything up at any moment.
‘If we move forward with the proposal now, it’ll just add fuel to the fire. It won’t help the family’s reputation or the company’s tability. So… I need you to just hang tight for a while.”
‘But I promise–by the time you get back, I’ll have everything handled. And make you an even bigger offer than this.”
Lucas said it all with such grand conviction, like he was laying out some master plan.
‘An even bigger offer?”
Riley repeated the words softly, her voice tilting up just slightly at the end, laced with quiet sarcasm.
She picked up the ticket and studied it.
“What if… I’m not interested in going along with your plan?”
J
“Riley!” Lucas‘ voice suddenly sharpened. “I’m doing this for you! I bought you this ticket so you wouldn’t get dragged into all this drama–so you could step away, clear your head. I’m trying to protect you here. And you don’t trust me?”
He moved closer, looking down at her from what felt like a pedestal of self–righteousness. “Are you telling me you’d rather stay here and help me clean up this entire mess?”

Riley let out a cold laugh, her tone dripping with mockery. “That mess is yours and yours alone. What’s it got to do with me?”
She flicked the edge of the ticket tightly with her finger. “And as for trust… how am I supposed to trust a man who lied to me from the very beginning?”
“So because I messed up once, you’re going to throw away everything we had? Riley, all those years together do they really mean nothing to you?”
Riley looked at his emotionally charged, pained expression and felt nothing but bitter amusement.
Today had truly shown her what the peak of audacity looked like.
“Whether it was once or a hundred times–you know the truth better than anyone.”
Lucas straightened up suddenly, the hurt in his eyes hardening into something more determined, more final.
‘Riley, my mind’s made up. And at this point, whether you leave or not isn’t really your call. Starting today, I’m stationing people here. You’re not going anywhere without my say–so.”
Riley could hardly believe what she was hearing.
“You’re putting me under house arrest?”
“Call it whatever you want.” Lucas rubbed his temples, sounding worn out.
He set the ticket down firmly on the coffee table.
Then he walked out.
Riley stood there without moving for what felt like a long time.
Finally, she picked the ticket back up and looked it over.
t was clearly a first–class, open–ended airline ticket, valid for six months to any international destination.
Lucas was so naive. And so arrogantly ridiculous. Did he really think six months would be enough to fix everything? That when she returned, he could just slip back into playing the devoted partner?
Once she’d confirmed his car had pulled away, Sebastian made his way downstairs from the second floor.
