he had expected a battle of wits between equals, but the man who had been so composed just moments before now seemed nexpectedly uneasy.
ebastian’s gaze drifted away briefly–he couldn’t quite meet her eyes anymore. Awkwardly avoiding her stare, he reached for the lass of water Riley had set on the table for him earlier and took a slow sip.
o it was all bravado after all.
faint, fluttery feeling rose in Riley’s chest, like the brush of a feather.
was clear now–this man, so sharp and unyielding in business, might truly be a novice when it came to matters of the heart.
he decided not to push him further, keeping that quiet realization to herself. The mood soon eased back into something light and ɔmfortable.
he next day, Sebastian moved with impressive speed.
e brought over a dossier on a woman whose photos showed a side profile and the back of her head strikingly similar to Riley’s.
Everything’s arranged on the airport side,” Sebastian explained, outlining the plan in a few efficient sentences. “You’ll go through heck–in as usual. Once you’re past security, you’ll switch with her in the lounge restroom. She’ll board the flight in your place and egin the around–the–world itinerary Lucas set up for you.
As long as you stay out of sight, Lucas will likely assume you’re off enjoying the freedom he handed you somewhere abroad for the
ext six months.”
fter reviewing every necessary detail, Sebastian’s expression shifted, turning unusually serious.
le looked straight at Riley and asked a question completely unrelated to the escape plan.
So… do you have all your paperwork ready?”
!iley paused.
ler mind was still tracing through the airport procedures, and the sudden change in topic caught her off guard.
t took her a second to understand what he meant.
The marriage license.
୮
‘I’ve kept them with me the whole time,” she replied without hesitation, her gaze steady. “But I don’t want to file in Havenbrook. Let’s go back to Nexopolis to do it.”
Havenbrook was Lucas‘ domain–the place where her nightmare began.
Nexopolis was where she grew up. It felt right to start anew there.
Sebastian didn’t waver. He gave a firm, sincere nod.
“Whatever you want.”

Outside the villa, the familiar car had been idling for a while. Lucas sat in the back, his silhouette obscured behind the dark–tinted
windows.
Only when Riley opened the door and slipped inside did the tension in his posture seem to ease slightly.
He turned to study her impassive profile and asked cautiously, “Are you absolutely sure about this?”
Riley slowly looked his way and offered a thin, humorless smile. “Did you leave me any real choice?”
Lucas shifted uncomfortably.
He let out a sigh, softening his tone as he slipped into the role of the concerned, devoted partner. “Riley, please don’t resent me. If I had any other option, I’d want you right here beside me. But this situation… it’s turned too dangerous. You haven’t seen how ugly these old–money families in Havenbrook can get when they’re fighting over inheritance.”
Riley, couldn’t muster the energy to untangle his pretty lies.
She turned coldly toward the window, watching the city blur past, and asked in a clear, detached voice, “So was the proposal event actually canceled, or did it just… go to someone else?”
‘Canceled, of course!” Lucas replied firmly, sounding almost wounded by her doubt. “There’s only ever been you. If you don’t believe me, you can call the venue yourself and ask.”
After all, he’d already taken care of everyone involved. They’d only say what he needed her to hear.
Riley pressed her lips together briefly and didn’t press further. “Fine,” she said flatly. “I hope your word still means something.”
The car lapsed back into thick, suffocating silence.
Lucas accompanied her all the way to the airport, watched her check her luggage, and walked her to the security line.
When the moment came, Riley moved calmly into the boarding corridor.
Everything was still going according to his design. She was following the path he’d laid out.
r
But just as Riley’s slender figure was about to vanish around the corner amid the crowd, a sudden, unreasoning panic gripped him.
Deep down, Lucas felt it then–once she walked away, there would be no turning back, no future left for them.
“Riley!”
