She asked softly, “So, are you saying that you and my father had an arranged marriage, too? That you’re unhappy?”

Riley pressed her lips together and looked away. Her voice was calm. “You’re worrying too much. Sebastian treats me well. And his family is easy to get along with.”

“That’s probably all an act,” Melissa shot back immediately. “Some people pretend to be perfect before marriage, just to get what they want.”

Riley turned her head and looked at Melissa’s eager face. “So, are you pretending to be nice to me right now? Before you get what you want?”

“How is that the same thing?” Melissa’s emotions flared. The car swerved slightly with her sudden movement. “I’m your real mother. Why would I ever hurt you?”
